#1 EF184

Still looking for cheap drivers for the 6AQ5 project.

I have found that the EF184 TV IF pentode is as cheap as chips.
It also appears, on paper to make a superb triode.
Looks like it would drive a KT120 in SEUL mode too.

Has anyone here any experience using it as a driver/input valve in either pentode or triode mode?

Thanks James,
On that basis I have ordered half a dozen. :)

The thing is, much as I adore the old British input and driver triodes I have, I would rather keep them safe and sound, in their boxes.
Sounds daft not to use them, but these old Brits are precious things and if like me you only have one or two specimens, they need to be kept for 'best' if you know what I mean.

I'm of the opinion that, in the KT120, I have found something special, so now I need to find something to drive it,
that is almost as good as an old British, hi-gain triode; not possible, some might say and I accept that, so the quest is on,
for something that with the KT120 and 6AQ5, will prove enjoyable to listen to long term.

The EF184 as triode looks very very good distortion wise, a bit like a 12AT7 but a helluva lot more linear

I have just found an interesting valve for this, an EFF51! Yep a double pentode in a 9 pin base! Common Cathode and looks linear from the transfer curves - need to find proper anode curves but it might be promising as an unusual find. Never used one so don't know how it sounds - its a Philips Miniwatt valve.

In stock at AskJanFirst but €20... so more than two EF184s...
