#1 Trying to stop spam

Post by Nick »

Ok, in a bid to help the problem, I have added a mod, that means that new users can't post a link to a url untill they have been a mamber for 7 days and have posted 10 messages.

It won;t stop them joining, but should stop some of the more offensive posts before we get a change to remove the users.

That's a good modification, lets see how that works.

Hi Nick
Sounds like a good idea but will this include me from posting links as I have only 4 posts to date so in theory I am a still a new user. if so I don’t mind if it going to help stop this spam

Nick/Darren,

Take a good look at the last four joining members. We could be vulnerable to a porn attack!

Best wishes,

They are pretty constant Greg, Nick deletes most of them pretty quickly and sometimes I boot a few...

Whatever you do don't click on them, you will regret it.....!!

So I've been told

Hi Darren,

Glad you're onto it. At the other place, Peter now runs a system whereby new applicants have to verify their interest by email before being appointed membership so there is a degree of vetting. Something like it might be helpful here.

Best wishes,

Greg

The mod that prevented posting links untill other non link posts had been made seems to have prebented them doing anything other than joining.

And the fact they have to have a valid email address stops a number from even being able to post.

Your latest anti spam seems to be working exceptionally well Nick.

Have we had one single spammer to delete since?

No, I have been clearing the spam logs (one click), and checking inactive users, but it much better.

Have had to add a ModRewite rule as it looks like a DDOS was being pointed at us. All I can see is that it was looking for a Oracle vinrability. Hopefully it will be blocked now. Time will tell.
