#1 Another Ebony Arm

Post by Will »

Its getting easier to make the Schroeder type arm.
This one is made from a 14"x10mm knitting needle
and ball magnets 3 in the base tube and 1 in the arm.
The sound is getting very spooky.

Lovely, Will, you're a sly one, knitting needles...eh..good idea?

Any chance of a close up shot of how you mount the cart onto the needle?

Nice, I can see the ball magnets must make life simpiler.

I should try this, I have plenty of space on the sp10 plinth to mount a long arm.

So what do you?

I guess something like....Sand a flat onto the end of the needle then bolt a plate onto that and the cart onto the plate?

Yes, recess the cartridge bolts into the ally so they dont
foul the arm and the same with arm bolt and use Epoxy to hold it.

Very very nice. Who'd have thought you could get a 10mm diameter knitting needle , and ebony too ?
How close is the hanging point of the wire to the magnet ( in the arm ) - did you drill into the magnet as Schroeder does ?

Have you used danish oil on the ebony yet Will ?

Mark, the distance is about 1.25" the thread is a loop, it loops over the arm and is held by stainless steel pins.

Ive used teak oil on the stock but the needle has a heavy varnish coating I think I will leave it.

Ah yes the twin-thread option as some of the early Schroeders . Makes sense . I was intending to make a unipivot from my ebony, but you've got me thinking now .

I dragged this from the archives, because i'm curious as to what kind of thread Will used to suspend his arms.

Does anyone happen to know?

Not nessecelery.

The thin stuff stretches, the thick stuff is unruly to work with, and anything else in between is a compromise. I just thought Will might have found something more suitable.
In the past i used a strong mending thread, which i thought was better. Can't seem to find any around here.
Kevlar is a possibility.

Its Kelvar thread fishing line about 15lb strength..

It does stretch but settles down after a day or two...maybe its the twisting settling down.

I found some in my wallet the other day from the last Owston. :?
