Funny, on many level's.Nick wrote:I think we are ok lads, no need for a cookery corner
Ooooo, Its been such a big learning day to day. After enlightenment re- cartridge and SUT impedances... tonight I've learnt (by ear) about setting up arms, VTA, VTF and Azimuth.
Last night I listened to the whole of 'I am not a Doctor' by Moloko on vinyl, no booze, just sheer straight up enjoyment. I wallowed in a mahoosiff sound picture and highs that went way up there <points up to the sky> and lows that went all the way to Australia, and the mid detail were really 3D. Totally lost in music as were Sister Sledge.
Tonight I thought, ooo, I'll just twiddle that azimuth a smidge as its 1 micron off centre (-ish) and promptly lost the mahoosiff sound picture and highs that went way up there <points up to the sky> and lows that went all the way to Australia, and the 3D mid detailing .
Bother!
Slight shift in Azimuth knocked out the VTF etc etc etc... I then set the VTF a touch too light and although I got some HF detailing back it was 'scratchy' and not right plus it was 'lite' lower down. I then expertly over adjusted to 2.7-ish gm and promptly lost all the airy-fairy detailing although bass was back by the truck load.
I then noticed the magnet gap had closed a little, so I twiddled that and my VTF changed.... and the Azimuth....
I'm almost 'there'... asylum or sonic nirvana, dunno yet!
Onwards.

I've acquired some little bits of approx 3-4mm thick brass and copper sheeting thats perfect for making up various headshell weights.
I've run a magnet over both sheets and there's no attraction, so I take it its not magnetic and is thus OK for duties next to the cartridge in the headshell yes?
Brass and copper aren't magnetic are they?
The TT + arm combo continue to astound BTW! <Insert chuffed smiley!>

i had a room last year and again in march.. its a couple of hours south east from owston... its a good do.. lots of hi shop stuff and a few really good systems as well... not that all the hif shop stuff owners reconise good systems... did i say that?...
If i get chance i'd love to hear the spu.. i had one on my christmas list.. but it turned out its too expensive...( which i knew) and i started to have doubts if it would be worth the extra over my car boot special dynavector...
which i must say i prefer over many other carts i've owned and heard...
let us know which room you are in Dr bunson...

Well, while you lot have been pushing the boundaries of the amp and speaker world ... I've been busy with different lumps of Trespa every night this week. I've trimmed 5 bits into different thickness's from 25mm (bum up, too high VTA) down to 18mm (bum down, bit 'unfocused' and meh.) 19.5-20.5 is the golden spot for me. So wuth that value sussed out I made this at lunch time...
Phwwoooaaaarrrr! (not).
Check out the size and thickness of that arm board, it weighs a ton BTW! It simply just sits on the top plinth. The blue tack just stops it getting knocked accidentally.
Still working on arm wire lead outs though, need to do more work here.
A funny thing happens when the arm/bias/VTA/VTF/wind direction is set in one particular position. I've only found it by accident twice in the last week and a half. The arm shakes, you can't see it but the effect is a wild vibrato (minute fast pitch change), I notice it on long drawn out notes and voices, I can can quieten it by very carefully adjusting the arm lead-outs whilst the record is playing. Must be some kind of resonance I think.
I'll try the recommended 14g headshell mass tomorrow night and see where that takes us. Does increasing the headshell mass send the Vertical arm/cart resonance up or down BTW? I'm new to all this.
Onwards, oh yes indeedy.
