Coz we're all mates, innit.

Phil was referring to the fact that if you were familiar with Andrew's style, you would have instantly recognised the work of a fine practicioner in the art of irony. Instead, as would be expected from someone new to these parts, you rose to the bait beautifully.

Anyway...

It is reply not initiation, ad hominem should always be consigned to the originator. It is a disease that breeds responses.

I don't rise to bait I respond to words and facts, and my response was factual and correct, nothing more. And I was commenting on the words not the person, the person is completely immaterial but once again like one notable other you wish to drag me into being the subject, sorry I am not!

If you wish you can start a thread about me, then I will be the subject, I will stay out of it and you can enjoy yourselves.

Emergency thread recovery program initiated...

OK, if we were to attach a piezo pickup onto the lumps of slate and tap them....

What are we looking for? The ringing after the initial 'donk'?

Not so much the frequency as the Q, I would have thought. It would be interesting to see how long any resonances take to decay.

Well, both I would say, if something has a resonant frequency about 20kHz or below 1Hz, we don't worry about it too much whatever the Q, but if its inside that range, then I think the Q becomes equally important. Likewise of the Q is so high that any resonance dies within a cycle then the frequency does not mater that much.

Wonder what the best way of exciting the material is? a tap is not very repeatable.
