Guitar amp - update...

There's a few things that needed doing to my guitar amp First, an extra (external) speaker. The amp can give over 30w out, but it's voltage limited. So, to sort this, I'm going to present it with 4 ohms instead of 8. So, I made the extra cab with an Eminence Beta. U-frame, 12. 17" wide, 15.5&qu...

Steve - those drivers look very familiar......

I, too, am watching this thread with interest. Seems spheres would be a good way to save on cutting wood etc.

Nick - that's the one - changing the time-base. Also, changing the number of volts per vertical division means you can effectively zoom in on one part. Use the x and y axis positioning adjustments to move around, and voila. Anyway, just because I'm a young whippersnapper, doesn't mean I use a digita...

Al - if it comes to it, I expect a router can be made into a lathe. I expect a too-large rounding tool would be perfect, provided it was around 18mm radius (not gonna happen...) There's a few lathes at school, so I'll ask around, see if my tech. teacher can make a few. Apart from that, there's a ben...

PSU ripple is completely normal. Perhaps the 2500 volts you're trying to measure (250x10...) is outside the range of the scope. If you want to zoom in, make the time division smaller, increase the number of squares per volt, then reposition the waveform, so you can zoom in on different parts of your...

Use the output of your computer, and download winISD - it has a reasonable signal generator.

Put the probe on the +, then adjust the time period (or whatever it's called) so you can see the sine wave. Then you can go searching for distortion...

Scot, having dismantled one of the lesser FRS8s, I can reveal that the dustcap is a mill or so bigger all the way around than the voice coil. They're built in the same way (down to the same basket, dustcap and voice coil diameter. The wires are well-protected, too. There's a lovely blob of black glu...

Could be fun. I might have to steal one of Dad's...

I used a lego dome once, on a pair of 4"+ whizzer drivers. They were rubbish before, and rubbish after.

Dunno, do they?

I've read of the benefits of them (better HF dispersion to name one), and now an opportunity has arrived to give it a try...

Here's a thought...

Instead of a capacitor in parallel with the woofer, why not put it in series with the full-range speaker, and put the inductor in series with the woofer....

I would've thought that's the usual way to do a first order crossover.

Phase plugs on the little speakers?

So, I have a long piece of 18mm dowel.

Should I take the plunge and go for a phase plug on my full-range speakers?
The voicecoil is 20mm diameter, so I figure 18mm should be about right...
I'll be making them using a saw to get it somewhere close, then sanding them the rest of the way.

Thanks,
Chris

Don't try to pull others down with you.

It's entirely your fault, and for that, I confiscate all your valve amplifiers.
You will send them to me at once........

It's simple.

Get a USB one like mine.

It's £10, and has exactly zero noise, unlike anything you mount inside the PC, that has all the lovely EM stuff to deal with.

They sell it at CPC, but I can't find the link atm...

Hi, Chris's dad here borrowing his login. Thanks to all for the warm welcome you gave us both on saturday. I was impressed by all the systems there - some of the open baffles were quite a revelation. When Chris (and his sister) leave home, I might be tempted to try something similar myself. Just got...

Now you've mentioned it...

Whose idea was the guaranteed million amp fuse... in the form of a 6" nail?

With all those power cuts, I really should've brought a car battery. My amp will run on 12V 8)
