Re: RTZ SDM (DSD) DAC
When I soldered the SOIC-8 components onto the linestage PCB, after 'tacking down' the opposing corner legs, I discovered that I got good joints by laying a piece of thin solder across the legs and wiping the iron across the top - you'd think bridges would occur but I didn't get any. The PCB also ha...

Re: Reverse RIAA
Nick's point is important and often missed. With certain devices you need to measure the resulting values to be sure - you cannot rely on bad statistics or on poor assumptions. When dealing with known random(ish) data like noise, paralleling up generally works out of the box. Agreed, and when I was...

Re: RTZ SDM (DSD) DAC
I listened to this at Owston next to the Valve DAC - you could barely get a fag paper between them. If I had to express a preference, I actually found myself slightly more taken with the sound of the RTZ, it seemed a little more 'lively' somehow. I will start my own thread when I get the boards back...

Re: The Newton 300B
Decided to plug in the JJ 6V6S tubes this afternoon to give them a try - I got them as a platinum matched quad from Karltone. First thing I noticed was the complete absence of short periods of hum on warmup, suggesting they are all coming up to temperature in perfect sync. And the sound... is fine, ...

Re: The Newton 300B
This amp which you may have seen ended up similar https://www.diyaudio.com/community/threads/two-driver-options-for-300b-push-pull.271081/ Unsurprisingly, it seems a great idea to me to drive the finals balanced from a Tx. It's an interesting thread. Cheers, Stephen Thanks for posting that Stephen,...

Re: The Newton 300B
Between the anode CCS's on the 6V6 drivers and the 6V6's themselves are 820R Ohmite wirewound resistors. I've just ordered up some Mills 1k resistors to replace them, as that will make the maths a lot easier when adjusting the CCS's. I'm not quite sure what possessed me to pick 820R originally, the ...

Re: The Newton 300B
Haven't built a PP amp since 1962 - but have you thought of the 6Y6, a very capable driver...... Haven't got the capacity for the required standing current sadly - I have 90mA to split over two driver valves and the input 12SN7. Ordered a matched quad of JJ 6V6S today cos I've decided I'm done with...

Re: The Newton 300B
Well, that was a bit sad. For some time I've been promising myself two pairs of large-bottle ST glass 6V6G's for the driver stage, and took delivery of some matched RCA's over the weekend. Checked them on my (basic) valve tester to make sure there weren't any shorts, and all looked good, although em...

I was driving back from Wales at the time and decided to pull over before it went off in case some numpty Sunday driver near me who didn't know it was going to happen got taken by...

That'll be an interesting article to read, not seen it before. Being based on a Lynn Olson design, my 300B's use Ultrapath but in push-pull obviously: EDIT - having read the article, it sounds like it's pretty close to what Western Electric were doing in the WE 86. Lynn calls circuit F "Western...

Re: What Are You Listening To Right This Minute?
Discovered this earlier in the week - it is the best performance of La Boheme I have ever heard, period. Just bought an early mono pressing of it. https://i.discogs.com/OMMVHoCARxUM5RYP0HSh9_jdbE7skwwMfFcbtPpevlw/rs:fit/g:sm/q:90/h:600/w:599/czM6Ly9kaXNjb2dz/LWRhdGFiYXNlLWlt/YWdlcy9SLTI5OTMy/MjAtMTQ...

Dammit I wish I'd seen this before COB on Friday as I may have been able to take the day off. Bugger.

Re: Nothing In Particular
I just bought this bad boy. The idea is to design a mono power amp and power supply around it, specifically for playing Meredith's 78rpm records and other early mono stuff, probably into a big single-driver corner speaker. (Mr Cresswell Jr you will likely have mail soon). Cost me less than I thought...
