Re: Audio Talk meet Owston, Doncaster, 10&11 june 17
Its a digital sine wave generated from a xtal clock, then used to drive a power amp and stepped up to give a stable 230v 50Hz. http://www.the-ear.net/how-to/upgrade-garrard-turntable In the ideal world it would make no difference, in this one it makes a surprising amount. Nick have you maybe though...

Re: Audio Talk meet Owston, Doncaster, 10&11 june 17
The phono stage shootout was very interesting - I agree with Ali, Thomas's stage really was outstanding. Not sure how easy it would be to fit in a rack though! Caveat: the following is based on my sonic memory which isn't great. So this might all be just an imagined load of old crap. If I recall cor...

Re: Audio Talk meet Owston, Doncaster, 10&11 june 17
In my experience with the Transcendent OTL designs, one of which was used in the Doc Mod session, those using EL509 valves typically have a B+ of less than 120V and even in my 300B OTL build the B+ is 'only' 180V. The Beast and Son of Beast designs run with a B+ / B- of +170V / -170V respectively. ...

Re: Audio Talk meet Owston, Doncaster, 10&11 june 17
Earlier today, courtesy of Dave's (Thermionic Idler's) Transcendent Son of Beast OTL amp, DTB's laptop and a pair of Doc Mods B&W speakers, I was horrified to find that I was liking a piece of music by King Crimson  And no, it wasn't an easy piece; definitely "specialist" in na...

Meredith isn't feeling too well so I'm afraid it'll only be me there tomorrow.
I'll bring the 15W Transcendent OTL again. I've spectacularly failed to make further significant progress on my current projects.

Re: "The Flatback Banned" OmniMet
Cheers Dave, I'm hoping to have both flat and tapered versions going at Owston in June, playing Herb Alpert, Matt Monro, Swing Out Sister, and Petula Clark. Then they'll be "going" alright; straight out the window, along with my arse! :D   That's okay, I'll be there w...

Re: "The Flatback Banned" OmniMet
Bloody hell, I've got a mind to see if I can get a room at next year's Scalford and exhibit the big Mets. "Oh yes, they do sound rather good don't they, these were designed and developed by a guy you BANNED for utterly spurious reasons, and I bought them to replace a pair of £6k commercial spea...

Re: Yorkshire Hi-Fi Club
Well both me and my other half are members here so not sure that would work. Gotta say this get-together sounds like it could be rather fun. And yeah I'm tight but unfortunately right now there's a genuine financial reason for that. I could bring my 'dangerous' OTL amp. Bought stuff off MCRU in the ...

Wait... what? Since when was it okay to ban someone from a forum for being a member of another forum?? That's insane.
Loving the name Steve, and very interesting concept too. Looking forward to reading about these.

Re: Dieselpunk Preamp of Doom and the Beast with Two Backs
Next update - well not much of an update I'm afraid. I did have plans to continue with the remaining circuit boards over the Easter weekend but I got struck down by the cough from hell and decided breathing in solder fumes was not a good thing. Right now I just don't know if I'm going to get either ...

Re: Audio Talk - what is it?
Loudness is a factor of distortion not power. If power it sounds powerful. A half watt radio can sound loud. That's a really interesting point, actually, I'd not thought about that. So what you're basically saying is that a 10w amp driven into clipping at regular intervals will measure less on a de...

Re: Audio Talk - what is it?
Well, say what you like about Owston but Meredith and I went last year, a couple of months after going to the HiFi WigWam show at Scalford a couple of months earlier. Despite the fact a lot of the gear at Scalford was very exotic and expensive (think oil rig platform style turntables and the like), ...
