Hi. just noticed that there is an interesting programme on tonight about "Tornado",a new build express passenger steam locomotive of the A1 class and probably the most powerful passenger engine in the country.

BBC 4 8.00 Tonight.

A short film (10 mins) on TONIGHT showing how things used to be !!

Produced in 1955 and part of the British Transport Films collection, this short film follows the heroic actions of railway workers who rescue a snowbound train in the north Pennines.

Hee Hee !

It is planned for Tornado to wear alternative liveries but must admit Apple Green is nice,if not historically accurate.

Tornado took part in a "race" recently from London to Edinburgh against a Jaguar XK120 and a Vincent Rapide manned by three Top Gear presenters.

Tornado has a maximum allowed speed on Network Rail of 75 mph and the car/bike had to keep to the "old" A1

Clarkeson was on Tornado firing,May in the Jag and hampster on the Vincent.

It is not known (by me anyway) who won but it seems the programme will be shown in June.

He's right, he's not wrong.

Oh yeah first episode of a new series. "from London to Edinburgh using a Tornado steam train, a Vincent Black Shadow motorbike and a Jaguar XK120 to discover what the programme might have been like 60 years ago."

I just loved the way the shadow crept up the A1 so stealthily and with so much guile that he came last by a matter of hours.........good job he doesn't build his amps that way

Oh how I would love the opportunity to sample the delights of riding a big Vincent ! When I was a lad (mid 60's) you could buy them for peanuts (chocolate coated of course) but now they costa de fortune !

Mind you riding on the footplate of a main line steam locomotive at speed must be quite an experience as well.

I'd bet good money that Clarkson didn't spend more than 10 minutes firing Tornado. Any more would probably have killed him!
