Nat King Cole, "Lets fall in love" on CD.
Just to see if my aural memory of what he sounds like is accurate.
The vinyl track that we played yesterday at the Yorkshire hi-fi club was deffo not up to scratch.
Perhaps Dave should upgrade his vinyl supplied from Oxfam ?

Currently listening to "American Beauty" - Grateful Dead.
Niiice! I'm trying to widen my musical horizons a bit, after having missed all of this stuff completely due to my obsession with soul and R&B during the 70s and actually it's great stuff.
I got slightly proggy (though this aint prog) as a teen during the early 70s until I realised that if i wanted to score with the opposite sex, then rock was not necessarily the way to go; not oop North anyhow. It had to be Northern Soul
Looks like I've got a whole new avenue to explore with this country/rock thing. It seems it's about little bit more than The Eagles.

Personally I wouldn't try to categorise the Grateful Dead as anything other than 'The Grateful dead' ! ( same with Beefheart )
That's a fine album. 'Box of Rain' was written by Phil Lesh when he was travelling to and fro to the hospital where his father was dying. When you realise that, it elevates the lyrics to a higher level - it's a very subtle piece of work.

Thanks for that insight Mark. I suppose that they have made their own category, due to the vastness of their body of work, as have Beefheart and Zappa too?IslandPink wrote: ↑Mon Aug 13, 2018 6:25 pmCressy Snr wrote: ↑Mon Aug 13, 2018 12:35 pm Currently listening to "American Beauty" - Grateful Dead.

I think it's more a case of how the make up of the band and their history affects the music. You had blues and folk based musicians, then people like Phil Lesh and Tom Constanten who trained as (modern) classical, then they all came through the San Fransisco LSD scene - it was never a standard sound - although 'American Beauty' is one of the most conventional-sounding Lps.. however it's not standard in detail - the lyrics, phrasing - the verse/chorus thing being pushed around or lines going on longer than you expect.
I really should play that LP soon !

If you get a chance to see this, its a good way to spend 4 hours.

I'll have a look at that, thanks Nick.
In the meantime I'm listening to Radio 4 Long Wave via my old Baird valve radio.
Such a friendly tone that wireless has; evocative of a simpler age.
Keep expecting it to say "This is the BBC Home Service. And now Childrens' Hour with Uncle Mac"
Bloody Hell, the shipping forecast has just come on. You don't get that on FM
