I got busy stripping the bits off my old SS'er yesterday then today went to town on Capsey.
Luckily I only needed to remove the parts that required attention IMO, so that left me with....
Ha!
Kerrrrikeeey it was a battle getting the seat post and quill stem out, I had to use all the tricks to free stuff up without break the corroded parts but without damaging anything.
I'm cobbling together bits from both bikes to build a minimalist SS'er, I might have enough bits...

Excellent progress sir!
Did you forget to drink your cuppa? I normally do when I get busy.
I was busy tending to a bike too this morning. The carbon Specialized had a deep clean prior to a thorough service in prep for the big ride.

Yup, well spotted. That was fresh coffee though and still too hot to drink so I thought I'd take some piccies while it was cooling.
I painted the chainstays as there was a lot of chips and a bit of surface rust, I don't want Capsey going the same way Aldous did, erks.
If all goes to plan it'll have a Brooks B17 Champion, a Campagnolo Vento wheelset, whatever BB cartridge gets the chainline bang on, and whatever handlebar and stem I've got in the spare parts drawer. A real bitsa but fettled to fit/suit me for my type of rides. I've kept the original drop bars and stem together from original Capsey for a later date/experiment, they need re-taping and re-cabling too as the brakes are the wrong way round for me. I haven't got any bar tape or enough cables spare so its a make-do-and-mend ethic going on down the shed at the moment.
Should have summat rideable tomorrow I hope.
Onwards.

Ta Mark.
SS'er = Single Speeder. Its got a (shock-horror!) new-fangled freewheel but no gears. The donor bike from Ray's mate originally had a Shimano Gear set which mounted onto a free-hub which he'd already converted to SS before it was gifted to me. I don't think its possible to 'lock' the free-hub to convert it fixed gear which as you 'may' have noticed I have a fondness for

Ah.
At least you can go down steep hills without crushing your sweetbreads.

Them Aldi maintainance stands at £30 are good value, don’t you think? Used mine twice now on my bike and son has also benefitted. Much better than crocking this 60+ old back, IYNWIM.

Not arf, adjusting brakes to perfection and getting accurate chainline is a lot easier when you can adjust the height of the part you're working on. Mine was a Christmas present from Amazon iirc.

That is one serious looking stand / clamp gadget / holder thingy. Where'd you get it?Dave the bass wrote: ↑Fri Aug 10, 2018 8:06 pm I got busy stripping the bits off my old SS'er yesterday then today went to town on Capsey.

I think it was from Amazon, it was a present from my step Daughter. Its one of these... -> https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Home-Mechani ... SwFdpbRjgX
It helped me finish the build today, whahey!
Corrrr...
Phwoooaarrrr!
I did a short ride, its like a very fast, very light free wheelin' version of Scobswell. Yey! Like.

I think it needs the drops back on it, more in keeping with speedster theme. They're easy enough to dress with modern bar tapes, which are comfortable too.
Otherwise, it looks like a good job well done. Enjoy.

Perhaps not a great example of it in use on the Amazon website though; modern bike frames are so light that clamping on the top tube can easily result in it being damage by crushing action. I have a Park Tools bike maintenance stand and clamp the bike on the seat pillar.Dave the bass wrote: ↑Sat Aug 11, 2018 8:50 pm I think it was from Amazon, it was a present from my step Daughter.
