#1 300B valve testing

Post by hificricketboy »

I am new to this forum, but a regular on a couple of other hi-fi fora. It was suggested that someone on here may be able to assist...

I have a pair of WE 300Bs for which I am not sure of their provenance. Does anyone know of a safe means of testing them or have a valve tester and would be willing to check them over?

I do not want to put them into my Border Patrol amp without knowing they're not going to blow having had a bad experience of valves going :blob6: ....it involved flames as the wiring and table went all scorchio!

I am based in the just outside Stourbridge in the West Midlands.

Cheers, Rob

There's a few of us who have uTracer 3s or 3+s (the 400V version) - they're quite capable of fully characterising a 300B.

I'm at the opposite end of the country from you - there may be someone closer who can help... its a 5V @ 1.3A filament and Va of about 300V which the uTracer handles fine.

I too don't live near. Have half (because I have to use the screen channel as an anode which makes labelling on the gui wrong, and I can't test multi grid valves) a 400v uTracer and I also blew up its filament supply. and haven't added the latest gui to my recently acquired only Microsoft computer, because in my life right now valve testing is precariously awaiting a place in:-

Post your request here.

http://www.world-designs.co.uk/forum/

There are at least two helpful members on that forum who can test your valves who live within striking distance of where you are.

If you're happy posting them to me I'll happily graph them out, but it might be quicker to find someone nearby...

Re Maslows-Hierarchy-of-Needs ~ very interesting! I usec to keep falling down on the "esteem" bit.

That was probably too much info wasn't it...

I never understood that, given that its "self" esteem, its entirely under your control, so doesn’t have any effect on anything external, I can hold myself in high esteem, or think I am a slob, or that I am a banana, they are all just labels you have applied to yourself, so effectively meaningless. I don’t actively practice it but I think my view aligns more with a Buddhist one, that "self" anything is just a illusion we use to justify doing what we wanted to do anyway.

Self esteem affects how we view ourselves, and therefore puts us in a "better" position to help others.

I have a better idea why the thread veered off, now, because I can see the picture that Paul posted .

But you make it sound as if self esteem is something outside of ourself. Its not, we decide, So "Self esteem affects how we view ourselves" parses into "we decide how we view ourselves", which parses into "we decide". "it" doesnt put us anywhere, so we decide. So the above phrase actually is "we can chose to help others". Much simpler.
