#1 WINDOWS 10 INSTALLATION

Post by andrew Ivimey »

oops cap lock....

this has been touched on before, somehwere but... I have a snazzy computer with (most of) Windows7 professional onboard / no licence number on the bottom and I would love to install Windows 10. How do I go about it please?

To get your free upgrade, head to Microsoft’s Download Windows 10 website. Click the “Download tool now” button and download the .exe file. Run it, click through the tool, and select “Upgrade this PC now” when prompted.

I read somewhere (quite recently) about someone who downloaded and installed W10, and when asked for the COA used his W7 number and it was accepted.

On Ebay you can buy a W10 COA number and disc quite cheaply (under £20), and the W10 download from Microsoft is free.

You might spend some time afterwards catching up with updates.

Thanks so far,

Chris' way costs £119
Neal's way it doesn't say
Philip's on eBay for £20.

I said, above, I do not have a code for the existing Windows 7. This I am guessing is the COA code.

I'm not sure when Microsoft started this, but the W10 authentication number (COA) is, I believe, stored in the computer BIOS. So if you reinstall W10 they know the COA without being told.

You will need your license code.
You should be able to find it in system.

Andrew,
if you download and run belarc it will tell you all the license and key numbers held in your computer.....essential if you want to do an upgrade without authentic license/key stickers etc....also highlights you to stuff you have installed that you might want to backup...just in case you forgot you had it..

You don't need your software key if your windows7 install is valid, I think this may be the correct link: https://www.microsoft.com/software-download/windows10

I've done about half a dozen systems and never needed the Windows7 software key. Of course MS may have pulled the free upgrade by now

Right, one done and as easy as...well, something that is very easy indeed. I'll do the other one later.

Belarc looks a very interesting app. I'll have a look at that too. Many thanks again for your help.

thanks Neal!!

I'm going to play in the risky corner now and see if I can update the mem sahib's laptop...it's win 8.1 and the biggest pain imaginable.
