As a permanent visitor to this small island for 35 years, I'm constantly amazed at many pedestrians attitude to crossing the road. It's as if stepping on to the road awards you an invincibility cloak. Electric cars will get a few. Darwin in action. Might be best to teach the nation how to cross the road.

"Electric cars: New vehicles to emit noise to aid safety. New electric vehicles will have to feature a noise-emitting device, under an EU rule coming into force on Monday. ... A car's acoustic vehicle alert system (Avas) must sound when reversing or travelling below 12mph (19km/h).30 Jun 2019"

I also believe there was some new law to the effect that all existing electric cars would have to have Avas retrofitted.

Yes, I’m banking on there being a way to disable it.
Or even better finding a hack that allows you to upload your own sample :-)
Driving a car on electric near people is a bit unnerving at first as they can't hear you.
I am often amazed just how quiet a lot of new IC cars are now.

Sort of defeats the other thread about reducing nose as it causes cancer though.

More info on Avas.

Just to amplify Nick's comment re IC vehicle lack of noise,

"The study also noted that some modern conventional cars are as quiet as their electric counterparts, even at low speeds."

I bought a new car last year, this time with a petrol engine, was suprised how quiet it is.. And I get 40 mpg..

Next thing electric pedal cycles will have to have alarms.. And disability scooters can do some damage 😊
The tube manual is quite like a telephone book. The number of it perfect. It is useful to make it possible to speak with a girl. But we can't see her beautiful face from the telephone number

I have to be careful when I go across the road to see what's going on in the pond opposite me, more than once I've nearly been mowed down by cyclists.

I don't know what the legal implications might be if there was an accident involving a pedestrian and the VESS had been tampered with ?

It’s EU legislation. Let’s see if it gets enforced.

Ha! Something like the sound of a Stuka dive bomber or a steam locomotive at full pelt?

When it pulled away I thought it was playing the intro to 'Master of the Universe', that'd be awethumne.

When a friend and I were irresponsible teenage drivers, we put a megaphone under the bonnet of his Anglia and played noises like this and other silly things at peds. It certainly gets their attention.

Thats exactly what I thought as well.

My suggestion for the sound would be Yakety Sax.

You can listen to the Kona sound about halfway through this pamphlet.

I'm surprised Brian Eno didn't have something lined up.
