#1 Reform Capacitor

Post by Michael L »

I've just bought myself an fleabay Peak ESR70+ and used it to test a an Elna Cerafine 500V 100μF+100μF. One of the elements was ESR >40Ω on initial test but subsequently 20.8Ω and 45μF and now back to >40Ω same capacitance. The other element measures 91μF and ESR 5Ω.
Am I correct in believing the cap/s may be ok after re-forming? If so, what would be the easiest way. I have a 2x30V lab psu with current limiting which I could use to apply 60V but I think I need to apply something near the rated voltage with an appropriate limiting resistance. If I need to apply the rated voltage to re-form , why is that?

Whenever an honest man discovers that he's mistaken, he will either cease to be mistaken or he will cease to be honest.
