I have a blue screen (of death) now and then, and searching on the interweb for some help it seems I might have an out of date driver somewhere, but unspecified.
Is there any software that can scan all my drivers and see if any need updating ?
The BSOD message is " system thread exception not handled" - but no specific file is mentioned.

Normally this is a video driver issue. Download the free edition of WhoCrashed from http://www.resplendence.com/whocrashed.
Run it. If you have minidumps enabled (you should have), WhoCrashed will tell you the driver that caused the crash. If minidumps aren't enabled, follow the instructions in https://www.windows10forums.com/article ... ows-10.50/ and then wait until the next BSOD. Note that if you needed to make changes to enable minidumps then you'll need to reboot before those changes will take effect.
It may well be a good idea to run sfc /scannow as described in https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/hel ... ted-system.
Update the problem driver - only use reputable sources, e.g. the manufacturer's own site.

Thanks Nick.
I had already found "who crashed", but when I tried it again this morning there were no mini dump records.
After another BSOD it found "ntoskrn.exe" as the culprit.
So, after a search there was a suggestion it was a memory issue, so I swapped the 8Gb memory for that from another malfunctioning laptop I had laying around.(not malfunctioning for the same reason)
SFC is something I am aware of, and I did that last night, but thanks for mentioning it.
So, I'll see how this other 8Gb memory affects things.
PS Re video drivers, do you mean the graphics card drivers ?

If it's *really* the kernel driver, then you have fairly fundamental problems - could be memory or PSU or...
Just make sure you put exactly matching (or faster) memory in. Note that the kernel often gets unfairly picked on and blamed for all sorts of stuff which might have originated elsewhere. i.e. the problem could still be in the video drivers.
Yes.

The fitted memory was 2 x 4Gb, but not matched.
The replacement is also 2 x 4Gb but (as far as I can tell) a matched pair.
Time will tell.

Just BTW as an aside, I now subscribe to malwarebytes, CCleaner & Avast. (I.e., pay money). As a paid up subscriber you do get a few more or better features, including automatic updates.
One quite good tool that came with a recent Avast update was a separate thing that looks for apps (formerly known as, programs) running in background, and stopping them being started at boot up, (unless if as & when you want them) this is to free up CPU usage & resources. Think I had like 14 things running in 'standby mode'
Couple I needed to revert were iTunes & Paintshop Pro 8, the latter wouldn't load otherwise, & iTunes couldn't detect when iPhone was plugged in.

You get that for free in Windows anyway: Go to Task Manager and select the Startup tab. Then you can right-click on anything to disable it.Mike H wrote: ↑Sun Jan 21, 2018 2:29 pmOne quite good tool that came with a recent Avast update was a separate thing that looks for apps (formerly known as, programs) running in background, and stopping them being started at boot up, (unless if as & when you want them) this is to free up CPU usage & resources. The free version of CCleaner has provision to adjust/delete start up programs.

Yes and it's very good, if you actually want to delete or reinstall, which I didn't.
-
Yeah already know that & done it on a few things. The issue is knowing what to disable & what not.

I don't have Avast. What does it give you that Task Manager doesn't?

I may be missing the point, but why do you put up with all of this?
