I get it. Pushing hard on the pedals this a.m. it suddenly came to me.

' to take the king's shilling'

Once you did this, voluntary or not you owed total obedience to the king.

I spect loads of you got this ages ago but it cheers me thst I'm not brain dead yet.
Philosophers have only interpreted the world - the point, however, is to change it. No it isn't ... maybe we should leave it alone for a while.

Probably right, but how does it become a verb?
The world looks so different after learning science. For example, trees are made of air, primarily. When they are burned, they go back to air, and in their flaming heat is released the flaming heat of the Sun which was bound in to convert air into tree.

one thing always leads to another...

I was listening to Simon Mayo(at least my wanting memory tells me it was he) last evening and a listener phoned in asking why spam still comes in a tapered oblong tin with a key....unfortunately I was busy and didn't hear the listeners replies....

did anyone hear this, and the replies to the question?

but the radio show question was about corned beef, and I'm only being pedantic because I really really wanted to know the answer.....why is it still in oblong tapered cans with a key?
