After a year out of the saddle, just had a very tough but rewarding 3 days in Yorkshire and Cumbria. Good quiet roads with remarkably few potholes. Plus some good food and beer in Ilkley and Dent with old college mates, shame about the Yorkshire drizzle all Monday.

160 miles and 12000ft over 3 days:

Ilkley/Fleet Moss/Hawes/Dent (my first cat2)
Dent/Arnside/Barbom/Dent for fish and chips
Dent/Ribblehead/Stainforth/Halton Gill/Rivington/Ilkley

I need to better understand the Yorkshire definitions for flat, gentle, undulating and rolling, because definitely felt nothing like any of these!

According to that you’re a foot shorter than you were when you started.

We've signed up for the Vätternrundan in Sweden in June next year. Last did it in 2000, so it'll be 20 years.

300km in a day. That'll be fun! (Actually, it's a great event).

4 of us going at the moment if anyone else would like to join us?

Well, we're doing what we did last time - taking the Wednesday overnight DFDS ferry from Harwich to Esbjerg in Denmark, then driving to Helsingborg in Sweden and spending Thursday night there in a youth hostel or similar.

On the Friday, drive up to Motola where we'll have hired an Airbnb log cabin. Rest up and eat pasta, before cycling to the start at about 1AM (or whatever start time we eventually get). Do the ride (with 25,000 other people), then back to the chalet. Early Sunday drive all the way back to Esbjerg and get the overnight ferry back or stay on a bit and get the Monday night ferry back.

We're taking a Volvo estate with 5 people, so can't take any more. Our two sons and a friend of theirs will probably go considerably faster than us - we just have to finish before midnight Saturday...

The ferry is really nice with great food and decent cabins. Good to relax.

Thanks for the info Nick (Jack). Food for thought. I wonder if I can drum up any interest down here.

I guess you're taking your bikes on top of the Volvo.
