I think we'd all be huffin' n puffin' on this one, it'll be about 65 miles if we avoid the horrible Crayford marsh section that we've done before with our SimonC.

A couple of really interesting rides this week.
1) I woke up one morning (Tuesday)... and instead of having the Blues I thought to myself "where does the River Darent that my fair home town is named after actually start?".
So I thought I'd follow the Darent Valley Path fairly closely and trace the river to its source, cool huh? Well I thought so, so off I went.
I rode to the where the mighty River Darent meets Ol' Farter Thames....
There's a whopping great Concrete and steel Barrier that either prevents Dartford from Flooding or too much Dartford awethumness escaping to London, I don't know which...
Scobswell was in 'Touring Trim' , which means we took a packed lunch.
Onwards we rode, until it was discovered by Christopher Columbus Jnr. that the Darent Valley Path doesn't actually go to the source (or more precisely 'sources' as I later found out!)
^^^ Theres actually 2 starting places for the Walk, one in Chipstead...
...where the River Darent looks like this tinkly trickly thing..
and the other is near Sevenoaks Rail station, hence the figure of 8-ing whilst navigating between start points and the return home.
It wasn't a long ride as such, just a 'I wonder where...' etc etc etc. As it turns out, I need to ride out beyond Westerham to get to the sources, thats for another day, I've done a bit of research and will prepare another packed lunch for that ride

Ride number 2) this week was more water related questing.
I woke up one morning (Thursday) and thought... "I wonder if I can ride right the way around Planet Thanet?"...
So I did!
I started at Whitstable and hugged the coast all the way round on the Viking Shore route, it was awethumne. I spent a lot of my late teens and 20's on this stretch of coastline but I'd never visited every bay in one day before. Brill sights along the way...
Easy to follow route, keep the Sea on yer left!
...unless you forgot to take a piccie of Reculver...
Entering Hipster-central aka Margit, as featured in the Chas n Dave operetta 'Margate' ....
...we find the place where Joni Mitchell was inspired to write a superb piece of music...
and Boz Scaggs wrote his shuffle...
...and Broadstairs, home of the best Ice Cream parlour in Kent (IMO), witness the fitness of a scoop Pistachio on top of a scoop of Sri Lankan Coconut. Zero Calories I'm sure...
and further round the loop where Charles Dickens recorded a concept album or summat...
and then from Pegwell Bay I cut right across Fannet which has hoooooooooooooooooge great Farms growing golden stuff...
S'fun.

Oooh. SWIMBO and I did pretty much that ride on the coastal path in 2014 zummer. Went to the Turner Contemporary (Tate Margate) to see the Mondrain exhibition, which was luverly - noone there but us...
Did you go through Reculver? That's where the Bouncing Bombs were tested by Lancasters flying from Manston - the bird reserve there is great for waders - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Reculver
Really like the Dr. Livingstone approach in the "Search for the Source of the Darent"
Did a lot of the coastal path - it's pretty good and we never saw many other cyclists...
Favourite ride is Goudhurst (where we live) to Whitstable & back. Lots of hills, about 70miles round trip, but totally beautiful and littered with good pubs...
DtB - you should be aiming for The Shipwright's Arms at Faversham - http://www.theshipwrightsathollowshore.co.uk/ - one of our top "cycle to" pubs ...

Yeah, like that Pub, did it on an Oare Creek exploration day. I prefer the Micro Pubs in Whitstable TBH more.jack wrote: ↑Fri Sep 08, 2017 11:58 am DtB - you should be aiming for The Shipwright's Arms at Faversham - http://www.theshipwrightsathollowshore.co.uk/ - one of our top "cycle to" pubs ...
Almost. Planet Thanet married Transit Van, ZZ Top wrote about it, "wimmins go crazy 'bout a Transit Van" or summat.IslandPink wrote: ↑Fri Sep 08, 2017 12:17 pm Tell me, am I right that Planet Thanet was married to Van Morrison at one stage ?

Cheese = Nom Noms
We're clearing stuff out JTS's childhood home and found some old pics of her long-deceased Dad, I never met him but check out his bike choice, I reckon we'd have got on just fine
Brake location on the 2nd photo is interesting.
She said years ago he was a cyclist and 'won stuff' in the early 50's.

Very classic shots there - excellent !
2nd shot, brake is positioned for improved aerodynamics - silly boy - did you not know this ? This practice was still evident in late '70's.
