did you mean he was riding a fixie?
Well his handlebars were fixed, that was a bonus :D
He looked a bit like my mate Mark from school - a lanky youth without much muscle , but he could climb very well.
In our club (Leigh) though we had a guy called John Byrne who was a good enough climber to place in the top 10 in the National a couple of times. I remember he used to ride in disintegrating rag-like socks on a rusty fixed-wheel bike with around 63" gear on club-runs into Lancashire ( Rossendale/Bowland). There was never a dull moment on those rides. Every time we hit a big hill, someone would fancy their chances of beating John, so there'd be a flurry of excitement as someone went up the other side of the road out of the saddle and cheers went up. Without fail the contender would slink back into the bunch on the other side , admitting he'd lost by a wheel or worse - there was just no beating him.

Have just got the trusty Holdsworth and MB out of t' shed.

Not pretty - rotten tyres etc. Both are projects... Possibly change Holdsworth to a ... dare I say it... a fixie...

...mainly because after 30 years the old Campag chainset is knackered...

Worth a try Nick, it'll get you back on the road if nothing else. Is it hilly round your way?

I trust that was a "joke" Mr. D? :)

This is the hilliest place in... well... this area! Goudhurst is on top of a big hill - whilst going anywhere is downhill, coming back is a right royal pain...

Now I'm back in Blighty for the immediate future, I may beg few moments of your time for some sage words of advice...

Nope, it wasn't, I didn't know where you lived or where Gouldhurst is. I do now, I used the webbernets.

It's all a matter of perspective! I'm further away from Offa's Dyke, so obviously it looks hillier from a distance... :)

SWMBO and I have done a few 100-milers around here and it's tiring even with a decent chainset...

You seriously do OD on a fixie? Respect ! I

Ooh, no, not OD - that would be an OverDose of fun !
No 'fixies' been seen up here lately . My current set-up is 46/38/30 with 12-25 at the back. This allows me some brief ventures away from the valley floor :!:

this very same thing had occurred to me but then I realised that my front gear is a biopace and I don't think that would work with a fixie......changeing the front set would be one step too far for me

What, you've got a granny ring! My drivetrain is typically something like 53/36 on the front and 11-28 on the back; I can do 18% or so on that.
Sorry, I couldn't resist!

As the old saying goes. after the feast comes the reckoning! I've added about 6lbs to my mass over the last fortnight and started on my new year resolutions yesterday with a 20mile ride at 16.2mph - not too bad after 10days off the bike.

My resolution is to get down to 12st, which will entail losing 18lbs in total.

Just to add some motivation, my new bike should be delivered on Monday and I've signed up for the 2019 Dorset and Somerset Air Ambulance Coast to Coast charity ride in May and a 100mile charity ride that crosses Dartmoor a little later in the summer. I'll do generous sponsorship for any AT cycling team member who does either on a fixie!
Sorry, I couldn't resist!

I think our DTB is having his hair done on those two days, it's unfortunate, but there you are.

I’m impressed. That is a tough one!
