Another quick 30-miler round Marden/Staplehurst/Headcorn/Smarden etc.

Headcorn Aerodrome is open again and the Spitfires were flying - doing low passes. Awesome noise...

Just been out for a ride, 1 hour 17mins. It was a ride of two halves - and I took it to the roads and gave it 110% in the second half.
First half was pretty flat and fast, some main road, then turned off and tackled a few of the very minor roads SW of Denbigh which have grass growing up the middle in places, or gravel/tarmac pick & mix.

A nice little run out this arfty; pretty breezy though. Just followed it up with some nice fruity hot cross buns, toasted and with a good dollop of butter.

Good effort . I though that was flat - given the speed - but then I looked at the feet of climbing !

I was going to go out on the bike today but was put off by the fairly gusty wind.
I went for a walk instead.
This took 2hrs10min and was a struggle the whole way.
Need a rest I think, not recovering properly.

Yes, the wind was pretty brutal down here yesterday too, up to 25-26mph from the South, which meant I was buffeted by a side wind for my whole ride; 10miles out to the West, around the roundabout and 10miles back! I think I'll take a rest today, like you, I need a bit of recovery time.

A quicker 46km early this morning (07:15-09:15) as it was cool & lovely. Better power and average speed.

Totally beautiful morning.

I thought this article was fairly informative, and not too long. Worth a look :

This one is more detailed and the best info I've found so far. Concentrates on cyclists, and long-term endurance exercise.
All very watchable, but the last 13 minutes has a summary, 'the good, the bad and the ugly', where he brings together the benefits and risks as they are known at this time.
The three risk areas seem to be :
1. Increased risk of Atrial Fibrillation, typically 5x greater risk in 'middle age and beyond' vs. healthy non-athletes
2. More chance of coronary artery calcification and plaques, at least in middle-aged Masters athletes. Appears to correlate to total volume of exercise done.
3. Areas of coronary fibrosis (scarring )
He says these problems "may or may not be picked up by periodic testing".
