I was tempted to do another ride this evening but it was a bit later and the light was going so I headed for the gym. Two milestones achieved on the spin bike; 10miles at an average virtual speed of 24mph and an average output of 260watts - PBs on both accounts! Average heart rate of 132bpm. I would still have rather been out on the bike though!
Sorry, I couldn't resist!

Cool cloudy very windy day. Goudhurst-Smarden-Pluckly-Smarden-Goudhurst. About 50km. My Garmin watch ran out at Smarden at 23km but whole run was 2 and a bit hours. Only stopped for a rather nice farmers' market at Staplehurst. Speed again a bit low as extremely windy (not my doing!) and a fair few decent hills...

Only got first section on Connect/Strava as watch died - need a plan B next time.

Will be riding minimum of 4 times/week so need the miles under the belt.

Saw a badger during daylight! Suspect it had previously been hit by a car and was now deaf and poorly sighted as it ignored me and was walking with a limp... Seemed happy enough though!

MRI scan on right knee this morning... #2 son likewise - we got scans one hour apart on the NHS! Both of us have similar injuries - I damaged mine diving in the Gulf of Oman in November last year and son did his skiing...

We see a few badgers near us late afternoon or early evening and they generally just go about there business with no regard for our presence.

Anyway I had planned a long ride today but its just too dangerous in the high, gusty winds so it looks like I'll have to settle for yesterday's miles an make the most of the time on projects.

Yesterday was a hilly and windy 24miles - hard work but I'm going well. I had to be quite cautious on the main bendy descent from the top of the Blackown hills as the roads were damp and the bike was pretty twitchy in the gusts - that's deep profile rims for you! Anyway, here are the numbers;

Departed: Mar 09, '19, 08:07AM
Starts in: Taunton Deane, England, GB
Distance: 24.5 mi
Elevation: + 1707 / - 1776 ft
Max Grade: 12.3 %
VAM: 519 Vm/h
Moving Time: 01:39:16
Calories: 978
Avg. Watts: 164
Max Speed: 32.7 mph
Avg. Speed: 14.8 mph
Moving Pace: 00:04:03
Max Heartrate: 133 bpm
Min Heartrate: 62 bpm
Avg. Heartrate: 105.4 bpm

So, I've decided to ride out with San Fairy Ann who just happen to meet in the car park at Marden Station, down the road a few miles from here... Loads of different groups of varying speeds and capabilities - all very matey...

Hugely active club and one of the oldest in the country. I'll start with the "Saturday Intermediates" and see how I fare... Typically 50 miles at 15-16 mph with a tea & cake halfway 😀👍

DtB and others: they have a specific, non-paced, group for metal-framed vintage bikes, which I might also give a go.... http://www.sanfairyanncc.co.uk/page-18199

This morning's activity for my son and I :

^^^^ Sun tan booth? You tart! :)

I'll stick with my little local ride for the mo ta Nick. I'm right-proper stuck into the Bullet rebuild and living in the shed for 4 days a week it seems.

Though I did do another mahoosive nearly 4 miler last week on Bellamy the Beater, with a cast iron barrel in my rucksack to take to the local rebore shop. That was a good workout.

Very VERY expensive suntan booth 😎

Have been stricken with pernicious and genuine 'flu.

Unpleasant. Debilitating. SWMBO now has it. #2 son (him in the MRI machine above) is succumbing but is flying today to Belfast (his Alma mater) for Paddy's Day with his mates. He can barely stand, and that's before he's had a drink...

I'm on the mend - theoretically doing a 50 miler tomorrow morning with San Fairy Ann, but it might be a totally stupid idea...

:D

That was for his knee, silly...

I started feeling a bit rough in Jordan, then we were in Dubai for a bit and I just had very little energy, then we came back to the UK just over a week ago and I was completely hit by it - zero energy. Very odd - glands not up, no sore throat etc., just total ennui, plus heavy sweats & shakes and a very deep dry cough - strong enough to make you double up. I slept for days.

Now on the mend but have antibiotics as it settled into my lungs and doc is worried about bronchitis & pneumonia (there was a touch of a bacterial infection going on). Doc also concerned that as it's a "Jordan" strain, there'll be no immunity to it here, so I have to keep away from old people (good advice anyway - they smell of wee...)

SWMBO now experiencing the full glory of it :(

I've just bought myself a previously owned (but absolutely like new) bike frame for a good price on ebay. It's a steel (Reynolds 520 butted tubing), no suspension MTB frame that I plan to build up as a new commuter/runabout bike. I have the matching forks. Finish is a rather nice polished natural metal, protected with a lacquer. It'll have hydraulic discs and the drive chain will be a single (46T) front ring and 9 speed (11-40T) on the back - mostly spare parts I already have in the garage. Should be a good speedy utility bike and gearing will be fine for all but the steepest hills.

Image

The chainset was a compact double ring from a road/hybrid bike but I've removed the inner ring - I'm just hoping the chain alignment is OK to use all 9 gears otherwise I may have to buy a single ring chainset.

The aluminium frame of my current commuter bike is starting to suffer from corrosion, particularly the welds around the bottom bracket so I decided it was time to do something about it. With some care and attention the new frame should outlast me!

That's a sweet looking frame. Nice!

Which hydraulic discs will you use? Can the frame/forks take them? Looks like the mount is there...

I didn't ride this weekend due to the weather. Grim. Cold, grey, damp and with 35-45kmh wind. SWMBO convinced me that I'm still not right and that it'd be a bad plan :(
