Don't see how it helps the end user though.

The bit that bothers me about this is that the US court decision came from a jury.
The case was thrown out of court in this country, and quite right too.

The Korean courts findings were amusing - the claimant and defendant were guilty of copying each other.

The case is actually quite simple, if laborious to prove - if patents have been awarded in the disputed territories then the date of patent award is the only point of interest.

If no patents have been awarded there's no case.

TBH Samsung haven't a leg to stand on, they wilfully and blatantly ripped off
Apple I find it incredible that anyone does not see that.
Personally (and I do feel strongly about this), I don;t thinks its anywhere as simple as a copied b, its a case of a copied w, x, y, and z, added a bit of their own, and b copied a, w, x, p and q and added their own parts as well.

Only in America, with a hand picked jury from Apple's 'Home town' favoured an American company over an Eastern company. Quelle surprise eh? Don't forget a German court recently ruled in Samsung's favour in a similar case.

The patent system in the USA is out of control, in a competitive market the idea is to innovate and keep your product up to date. To try and claim patents on scroll and zoom methods is pathetic, what next? Patents on rounded corners?

Didn't Jobs himself when he was alive declare he was going to wage 'thermonuclear war' on Android?

I truly detest Apple, greedy manufacturer of throwaway products with excess bling and an outrageous price tag bought by people who are having the wool pulled over their eyes and thinking that by paying over the odds for a product that looks stylish they are somehow members of an elitist clique. Tossers.

The new I-Pad's screen is irrerairable, it's glued in, the memory is also soldered to mainboard making it irreplaceable or upgradable. Got a nice new I-Pad? Be prepared to throw it away in 2 or 3 years and lay out another monkey just to be ahead in the fashion stakes.

On second thoughts, these people probably deserve Apple products.

Jobs ran Apple as a predatory company and acts as if he invented the smart phone and the concept of an operating system. Of course graphical user interfaces use ideas from previous or existing ones. Apple does it too.

Pah!

Disclaimer: If you have an Apple machine and you're happy with it, good luck to you, but not for me ;)

and the total dedication to making the customer feel special that was and still is at the heart of the company. That is what made the company the force it is today
Yep, I agree to some extent, and I have used and worked with Apple products off and on for 35 years, some great, some stinkers. But if what you say was true, and if Apple themselves believed it, then a "copy" would just be that, and not worry them, but it does, and they would sooner (it seems) use the creative skills of lawyers instead of engineers.

I posted the historic clip of Steve J partly because of the Irony, and also because I think he was right, it seems that the patent system is being used in ways it was never meant to be used, and I think as Ali suggested the looser in it all are us the end user.

sorry to appear selfish but does this mean that Samsung will be made to send a patch down to my Galaxy SII which dissables it?

Or will they just have to stop making any more smart phones with an iphone style operating system, and allow the existing users to continue?

Also what about all the other Android phones?
