From the ads anyone would think television was a growth industry in the 1950s!

Thanks Ray, that brings back memories for me. Dad was an engineer with the beeb, taught electronics at night school, and fixed valve TVs in his spare time for extra cash. Sadly I was only interested in cars and motorbikes so didn’t really take an interest at the time. But I think my liking for valves is partly nostalgia for those days. When I started playing with valve stuff my dad was incredulous that they were making a comeback....

I've been wondering how i could do some braising without spending a few hundred on torches, bottles and regs
I read a few months ago some of the wartime bike frame builders used house gas and compressed air and it worked well
I've got a large propane bottle with an adjustable regulator and a decent compressor,
I've just bought a propane/ oxy torch from china, there are some very cheap plastic ones from £13.99 but I thought I'd lash out £35.00 on an all metal one
I've got my fingers crossed it works on compressed air and gets hot enough ?

I have a couple of bullfinch propane torches but they don't get hot enough, the last one bought has a much bigger burner but it still doesn't get me there.
Will update how I get on.

When I was at school they had something similar for us to use in metalwork lessons.

I don't remember them being very efficient.

I invested in proper oxygen/acetylene welding equipment MANY years ago and it's invaluable.

Plus, with proper kit one can bronze weld, which is far superior to brazing.

I have not done brazing since I left school.

Wonder if it's a silly suggestion, but what about a mig?

I haven't got the hands for oxy by a long chalk, but even me, a complete novice managed to do a decent enough job with a mig set. I was being shown by a mate who is a professional welder how to do it, having never done any welding before, but still.
They aren't too dear these days

I want to braze a bracket on the goldstar frame.. a bit big to post Ali... but thanks.
I could have wangled an oxy/ acet kit a few years ago but I did not have a use for it at the time.
I've got a mig Ant.. not quite right for the job.

Surely you can find a local fabricator to do the work for you, Steve. Shouldn’t cost much as a one off job.

According to my "reference" the swinging arm frames for the Gold Star models were essentially the same as the cooking B31/B33 models from their introduction in 1953. And the twins frame was also similar barring the RH downtube which was kinked to clear the singles oil pump.

Seems that Reynolds 531 was not used for customer machines.

I was of the opinion that those swinging arm frames were all welded up, certainly the one on my Tri-BSA scrambler is.

Which bracket are you wanting to re-attach ?

PS Frames made with 531 tubing were normally bronze welded.

A thought occurred to me today(during the corona crisis).

Will there be a holdup of freight flights out of China at the moment, as a consequence of the lock down on travel?. Quite a lot of ebay stuff, particularly audio and electronics come from China and I thought maybe this will affect ebay orders...

Crickey Phil.. you know your stuff
Mine has had some additional brackets for the footpegs made and attached further back, one of them wants refitting ( or removing) as it has twisted.. I could get it done locally, but by the time I take it/ pick it up and pay, I've bought a tool that 'should' do the job .... hopefully

I'm not sure if you've brazed before Steve, but if not you might find this interesting.
