Excellent point about the croc clips. Did you mean H&M? We have one of those in Tunbridge WellsThe Stratmangler wrote: ↑Wed Jul 29, 2020 10:13 pm They do crocodile clips, don't they?
And for less than they cost in the S&M shop.
All good guesses but none right.... It's really me grumbling about excessive packaging....
I ordered 1 metre of RG402 coax - this is special coax in a copper tube, exactly 0.141" in diameter. It's sometimes referred to as hard-line or semi-rigid coax. You see it in high frequency test kit, typically 1GHz or higher (e.g. microwave) - it's like plumbing - preformed and with special SMA/SMB connectors directly soldered to the copper sheath. It's a complete bitch to work with if you don't have the correct stripping tools - terminating it manually is painful and time-consuming - a proper hand tool for correctly cutting the ends is nearly USD 800. Insane.
The main thing is that it's extremely low loss at GHz frequencies. RG316/U has a loss of about 0.93dB/mtr at 1GHz; for RG402 the loss is only 0.37dB, i.e. well under half as lossy. Over 1GHz it gets even better and RG402 is good up to 36GHz. I'm working at around 1GHz for my current project.
I was expecting my 8 quid order to arrive coiled in a smallish box, instead of which Farnell sent the massive one in the photos with the tiny cable hiding in it.
Props to them for protecting it so well, but seeing as how it's normally shipped on drums and so is coiled anyway, it's all rather silly for 1 metre of cable...

“I contend that lots of people have heard sound coming from two speakers, but only some have really heard the stereo effect. Many of you will know what I mean. You visit friends and their speakers are scattered around at odd angles and in odd places and topped with ashtrays or cup holders. There is no attention paid to equidistant spacing and on axis sound, and usually decor issues reign supreme.”

That’s me buggered then.
