Certainly a contributing factor. I knew there was latticing at the edge of my right retina, been there for many years, but when they compared this year's photos with last year's, the damage has increased significantly and the risk is now immediate.

Not good. Commiserations.
The world looks so different after learning science. For example, trees are made of air, primarily. When they are burned, they go back to air, and in their flaming heat is released the flaming heat of the Sun which was bound in to convert air into tree.

Thanks chaps - I normally get checked in December but I'd noticed that when driving at night, I was getting "flaring" when looking at the tail lights of cars in front - but shutting each eye in turn I narrowed it down to the right eye only. I then did some tests about reading distance with each eye and realised that my vision in the right eye had changed significantly, probably in the last month or so.

So, went to Moorfields a month early. Jolly glad I did. Prognosis good, though.

Should be OK - the administration of the anesthetic they use to shut down the eye whilst working on it is unpleasant, but I've been there before and it's back to normal in a few hours.

Back from surgery - in and out of Moorfields in 2 hours. Thoroughly professional and efficient. Techniques have improved since the last times I had surgery to an eye 5 years ago.

470 x 40mS @ 300mW zaps of a 570nm laser. Not as painful as before, but am really sensitive to bright lights ATM. And there's a lot of bright light here..

Nice work. Hope the side-effects wear off soon.

Did they dilate your pupils Nick? I remember when I had this done to map my retinas before I started working on fibre optic PDH line systems.

They ALWAYS dilate your pupils - can't see into your eyes otherwise. As soon as you arrive, you get the drops put in (in my case, two lots) and have to sit around for 20 minutes while they take effect.

Them the start with the anaesthetic drops, then finally any needles, by which time my vision was so far gone I couldn't, thankfully, see what they were doing.

Have to say that they were very good indeed - today, my vision is back to normal and I'm safe in the knowledge that my right retina is no longer at risk of spontaneous detachment. That is good to know, as SWMBO & I do a lot of travelling in out-of-the-way places where access to a world-class eye hospital at short notice is not even a pipe dream, it's an impossibility.
