I hope it isn't anything too serious/expensive with the OTL Steve.

The way it just faded out leads me to suspect thermal shutdown of the cathode CCS. The heat sinking is marginal and the sheer density of the internal layout, now I have the greatly increased hardware from three power supplies plus the choke loads on the driver stage, is really not helping matters.

The answer, is probably a complete rebuild on a larger chassis, and actually using the proper finned heat sink I bought last year to mount the cathode CCSs on, rather than trying to use an already warm chassis plate as a heatsink like I’m now doing. I now have some proper TO220 mounting kits. Just need to get our Ant to tap some blind 3mm holes in the finned heat sink, to screw into. That’ll be the Winter project.

Dunno if anyones seen this? Very American manufacturer biased but still interesting all the same. MrI's/ElectroHarmonix stuff gets a lot of screen time :)

My suggestion would be to find the problem before planning the solution :-)

Wise words. :)

@ Steve, sorry about that. But what Nick said. Nope the silicon witch-doctory stuff don't like getting too warm. Yes regulator chips often have a thermal shutdown circuit, 317 does anyway, presumably others of that ilk.

Mine:
Had a reorganize and tidy up of the "lounge" (read that with a posh Hyacinth Bucket accent :D )

The speakers weren't making it out front in the middle of the floor (well sort of), and were just in the flippin' way all the time. Also couldn't leave the door open (off picture to the left) else totally blocks one speaker. So I moved the Akai tape recorder to that position instead so then I could slide the "entertainment unit" further along the wall to make room on either side for the Magnolia Specials to fit in. Dunno what it sounds like yet but can't possibly be worse!

Thing is. Thermal shutdown is more likely to be instant than case out. And I wonder if sound will still come out with no cathode current. Maybe half wave rectified. I would expect case out from a thermal shutdown from a regulator feeding a heater.

Soon setting off to sample the delights of Christmas in West Yorkshire.

The AA map seems to indicate no hold ups, so should be a smooth journey up. A bit of the "new" A14 is now open so that should confuse the sat nav. I have it on incase of problems that occur after I've left home. Doris keeps me company.

True. Actually sounds more like a stage drifting to supply rail, until there's no signal left, something like that.

Listening to the cricket (England vs South Africa) and just noticed that I must have been online for too long - I know tests go on a while, but this is taking the piss!!

#10965 Milestone 3

Post by IslandPink »

Nice !

Meanwhile - today had the latest sunrise. This is the third of the three winter milestones I look for. We've already had the earliest sunset ( 13th ) and the shortest day ( 21st ). Definitely on the upward path now :)
