Baku

You may joke about Syria, but...

Was supposed to be working in northern Jordan in the Zaatari refugee camp (close to the Syrian border) but someone or other has started bombing Syria, so the border area is now even more unsafe and closed to foreigners.

Had to cancel Jordan trip a couple of days ago and decided to go back to the UK for my birthday...

Not as easy as first thought...

I wasn't joking about Syria but Baku is even further out of the way unless you are coming back to England the very long way round.

There are simply no economy direct flights from the region in the next few days - there are business class seats at about GBP 3,550 ...

So the cheapest slightly decent flight from here is with Azerbaijan Airways via Baku... 11 hours trip vs. 7.5 with Emirates. I can live with that for a GBP 3,200 saving...

Didn't really want to spend my birthday in Baku without the family...

I enjoyed Mr Portaloo's recent foray on the rails in Georgia and Azerbaijan - both on my list to visit.

The only time I've seen Azerbaijan is from over the border in Armenia last year. That border is closed as they're sort of at war over Nagorny Karabach which is now heavily militarised.

Georgia and Armenia are both great, as are the people. We started in Yerevan, travelling all over Armenia, then took the old Soviet train to Tbilisi before roaming around Georgia. Certainly going back.

Yes yes yes, I too have been in Armenia but that's another story. It's not important really.

There's this bar..... OMG, hysterical adolescent laughter.... but seriously there us much to see and do because it was a stylish place to visit before they discovered oil.

Sorry to intrude.

Now that is a funny place, full of adolescent laughter.

I suspect it was - looks like it was lifted from the britishexpats or similar site... Who would go to somewhere like Azerbaijan and then go to a Rangers supporters bar. Stupid.

Is the air quality still grim?

No Guess, ive worked in Baku both on and offshore for many years.

I like the nodding donky's, fountain square (especially Sundays), the cemetery, the old town, and the Vodka.

Rest of the place (like most places ending in jan or stan) is a fukin shit hole.
