#1 RIP Don Garber

Post by Thermionic Idler »

It seems Don Garber of Fi has sadly passed on. I'm guessing not many here would be familiar with his work but for some years I owned a pair of the Fi 2A3 monoblocks and I still have a Fi Yph phonostage. I really liked the guy's design aesthetic - I kinda feel as though I should keep the Yph around as a design piece.

Edit: the following is a rather wonderful write-up / obituary by Jeff Day:

I had seen that on the Joelist, but that's a lovely article there to fill in more details. He was obviously one of the key people who drove the valve revival. JC Morrison must feel his loss very much. I remember all the references to Fi and the adverts in Sound Practices.
I didn't realise you'd owned some Fi amps - respect due :)

Thanks - I kind of regret selling them now because I'd have liked to have heard them with the Mets - they weren't all that happy with the Hornings, they just couldn't control those big bass drivers very well, but the midrange tone was lovely. I always liked 2A3's. I know from Steve's historical posts that low powered SE amps drove the Mets quite well, although these probably would have still been a little underpowered. Unfortunately at the time I was in a financial bind, they weren't being used so they had to go onto the market.
