#1 RIP Al Jarreau

Post by Irene Idler »

A jazz trombonist friend of mine said the following about this track:
Jarreau (RIP) sings the second solo. This is a style of vocal jazz called "vocalese," which was invented by Eddie Jefferson and then developed and popularized by Jon Hendricks. To create vocalese, the singer transcribes the solos from instrumental performances and then writes lyrics that fit them.

This song was originally by Miles Davis, from the famous Kind of Blue album. On this arrangement, Bobby McFerrin sings Wynton Kelly's piano solo, Jarreau sings Miles' solo, Hendricks (amazingly) sings John Coltrane's tenor solo, and George Benson sings Cannonball Adderly's alto solo.
"Hey, you know the rules, baby. If you wanna PLAY funky, you gotta SMELL funky." -- Mike Troutman
