Different brands of valves on each phase...fascinating.

Now here's a thing.
I have a number of EL84s matched for transconductance.
These are all of differing brands. four new JJs, three new Genalex N709 reissues and a motley collection of Russian 6P14P.

So I thought, maybe it might be possible to do a few tone experiments by deliberately using one brand of valve in one side of the output pair and a different brand on the other.

It quite fascinating. Match the currents with the balance pot, play the music and you can vary the tonal palette at will.

I found that a JJ on one side and a Genalex on the other in both output pairs, gave the best harmonic qualities and the most natural presentation.

Here is where I got the idea from. It seemed such a crazy thing to do that I had to try it for myself.

As I said....fascinating.

I have a very strong suspicion that by having non-matched distortion contributions, you've been able to add some even-order distortion to the typical 3rd/5th/7th harmonic of the push-pull output stage - so making it sound more natural

This would be an ideal thing for Andrew to test at the next Owston , would be v.interesting .

Aye...I'm up for testing.

This is one for Mr I to try in his Amity.

Shuguang 2A3C on one side and a JJ 2A3 40 on the other.
Unless of course, Amity is now in bits.

Happy to bring the test set then, if you want?
