As soon as a valve is dead I have no further attraction to it. My attraction is based on:

1: it's ability to make good sounds,

2: its investment value.

Both of these die with it.

Okay Mu-man, I have two NOS GU-13s (nice big transmitter valvolae), which are straight off the plane from Tblisi.

They don't work.

Give us £20 and I'll mail them to you.

#24 a single stage amp?

E55L has a gm of 45 but the grid is so close to the cathode that a lot of them have a manufacturing defect and don"t pass the tests. Maybe KT 33C is a more realistic option with its gm of 10 and more rugged looking construction. It also looks like a proper valve while E55L has a distinctly effeminate appearance.

With regard to the step up transformer, I have used a 3:1 step up on a regular basis but with surprisingly weedy results I have been informed that in order to double the volume one has to increase the power 10x, yet another illustration of Sod"s law, as if any were needed. Steptoe.

Oops. I don"t know how the above comment got here. It is completely out of context and should be ignored. However, while I'm here perhaps I could add some thoughts as to why we collect valves. It is not a question of whether, but of when, the Earth will be struck by a massive solar storm, resulting in the destruction of all electronic equipment that relies on solid state technology. Yea verily, the doubters and mockers shall then weep and wail and run about like headless chickens while we, the chosen few, continue to enjoy listening to our music like nothing has happened, while our vast stores of old valves will suddenly be worth their weight in gold. It'll all be fine if it's switched off before the storm hits. :D

Dear Ali, if you have children you will already know that nothing is ever switched off. Best wishes, Steptoe.
