#1 New 50's from Emmission Labs
New type '50' coming out apparently .
http://www.audioasylum.com/cgi/t.mpl?f=tubediy&m=204100
They will no doubt cost a few quid - but less than a NOS 50, if you could ever find one .
As Jeffery Jackson says - they may not sound quite the same - but could be really good non the less.
If Paul is around - Paul, is the 50 similar to a PX25 ?
I will go and check the numbers .

I have some 50s made by Shuauauauauguang. They look cheap but they sound fine. I've got some ancient 10s(not thoriated)and various vt25s, 801as, vt62s and probably another variation.
RCA 50s didn't have a long life - they were about 4 watts I think, high ra so when someone came along with a 300B with 800ohm ra and about 10watts it knocked the 50s on the head - end of.
There is always the VT52 which did have beautiful musical possibilities and sweetly low ra, so again 50s died a death.

Philosophers have only interpreted the world - the point, however, is to change it. No it isn't ... maybe we should leave it alone for a while.

The original ones are supposed to sound really fine though .
They are not quite the same as a PX25 - higher Ra of about 1800R , which will need a 5K or 7K transformer .

I wonder if the originals did sound grrreattt or they were scarce. Ibelieve only RCA made 50s.

Nice try Andrew ! - but Frank's tube database shows datasheets from RCA, Sylvania, Cunningham and Tung-Solandrew Ivimey wrote:I wonder if the originals did sound grrreattt or they were scarce. Ibelieve only RCA made 50s.
I think it would be difficult for them not to sound great , given those sort of manufacturers, and the excellent curves they show - also , many of them were globe envelope. Whether they are better than a good 45 or a PX25 I don't know - but you can get 4.5W out of them . I was wrong slightly about the loading, as RCA suggests 4.35K for full power .
The new ones will be at least £350 a pair , I expect, so I'd better stop thinking about them .

Or, if you don't like the new ones, buy a pair of these :

If my numbers come up on the lottery this evening, I will be buying those, no question, what could be more cool ?

Perhaps the similar 801a is better bang for the buck.

801a is a lovely valve imho. The ones I have seem to have a carbonised anode - they are thoriated but glow a darker shade inside the anode. Bog Standard old VT25s are really worth their weight too. Their anodes look 'cleaner'.

I could have said what I meant ... or
The ironic use of 'imho' ... or not.
No one may have ever described this valve as 'lovely'.
I may not be totally objective in this description.
I may even be lying hoping to distract attention from an even finer valve that I want to hug to my chest and hope no one else snaffles them up on eBay so I can get the remaining stock cheap.
That I could be 'humble' - some may think that this in itself is a joke.
Or indeed that I am quite capable of humility and tentatively point out what I have found; the 801a is a lovely valve - the way I am using this valve yields beautiful detail in a way e.g. that I have not had from 300b and I have tried a few ways of strangling that cat both PP and SE, different drivers, interstages, D.C. cap coupled and many versions of the valve.
Does any statement have a 'face value'? I could have meant just what I said.
Time for breakfast - coffee, toast - imho, compelling indeed!
ek ek ek ek ek ek ek ek ek etc.

I believe the humble 71 was missed from the list. Imho it's a cracker and I bet you rue parting with it(them).
That makes 2 humbles, you and the 71.
I havn't heard any 50's yet but I look forward to the day.
diet: I was thinking about the 'more than' advertisement...whats more than 45, ah yes, 50. What's more than 50?, why of course, the 71. and any fule no, the bigger the better.
There's nowhere you can be that isn't where you're meant to be
