#1 Genalex Gold Lion EL84 Reissue.

Post by Cressy Snr »

Just received a pair of these valves this morning.

Made by the Electro-Harmonix factory. Very very good indeed.

They are more expensive than other new production EL84
but IMO worth every penny.

Not many on here use EL84s but they are worth mentioning nevertheless.

Yep, they are very nice, but try and keep Va below 300v with them (IME)

I would have thought 6v6 was similar

Hi Nick, agreed on that one.

Mine run at 275Va so they should be fine.

I know the music shops don't recommend and won't guarantee them in VOX AC30 amps as these run at 15W dissipation.
The Genalex is a 12W dissipation valve apparently, so VOX AC30s kill them very quickly.

6V6 is the electrical equivalent for sure - a side by side trial may well show that they sound quite different. i.e. I haven't done this side by side but have tried both in PP mode and ... I regret to say I preferred the EL84 and of the various I tried, I liked Saratov EL84Ms

Now I do have a bunch of EL83s - similar but not the same and they are gathering dust.

'...at my back I hear Time's winged chariot hurrying near...'

it s funny how if you got the time you aint got the dosh and if you have some dosh you ain't got the time - its crap if you have neither, I admit. All that money that went on a trip to Syria is being refunded... but a new kitchen is required - odd that as SWMBO almost never does anything apart from cut flowers in the kitchen. She has a willing and faithful slave to do the cooking and washing up.

Fraid so, today gardening took precedence over music.

Got the back of the car up on ramps now, looking for another knocking noise.

I have a low attention span, so I like to have several jobs on the go, and flit between them.

Thinking about a bottle of cider now, and relaxing in the late afternoon sunshine.

Must get a bottle of Gin soon so I can gave the afternoon G & T.

Nearest Mullard equiv. probably is EL32

http://www.r-type.org/exhib/aaa0314.htm

No guarantee it sounds anything like an EL84 though, which is later production. I suspect 6V6 sounds quite different as well.

Remember to check what voltage is on the cathode. 300v is the max they are ok at, its beyond 300v and 12W that things start to go wrong.
