#1 PT15/KT66

Post by pre65 »

Hi-i was reading some old posts from James D on (whispers)the WD forum where he states that the PT15 and KT66 in triode mode have virtually the same curves and would be interchangable, even suggesting an amp with dual sockets so both could be tried (but not at the same time).

Has anyone ever tried this ?

Then i had a silly thought (dont we all ?) Is there a way of wiring a PT15 (a pentode) to replace a KT66 beam tetrode ?

The real sillyness would be making adaptors to try my 4 spare PT15 valves in a pair of Quad 11 amps.

Or perhaps a copy of a circuit for KT66 triode in push pull ?

Nurse-bring the straight jacket-he's flipped again  :D

Okay Philip, from time to time we do have these odd thoughts and the idea of PT15s as push pull is attractive. In triode mode you get over the vagaries of beam tetrode to pentode, dead easy when its the same socket (e.g el34 and its similar beam tets) but not when you have the anode cap and a different socket down below. It could be done but ... it would be heathrobinsonnish.

I think its best left to the realms of speculation... but here's a thing. I have some 6W6gts (fairly rare) which were 50cents each. which, according to Lynn Olsen on nutshellaudio.com are equivalents to 45s when run as triodes. But have I got round to that?? nope.

Hi-Andrew-hows the hand ?

Personally i am a member of the heath robinson appreciation society !

Could use some octal plug in adaptors to get the output !

Cost would be 4 adaptors and 4 B5 sockets.

mending ... mending. just can't do much with it for the mo'.

You are a nutcase!

I may have some spare B5s though. I've made 'octal' plugs out of old octal valves. I use an 83 rectifier in place of a 5U4G with this type of 'plug' and a ux4 for the 83. makes it taller!

ha ha - probably!

I use a chap in Beijing for sockets who ads on eBay - can't remember now but is dead cheap.
