#1 ariels

Post by ed »

The man came to pick up my ariels this afternoon....

I've never missed a piece of hifi before but I'm beginning to regret parting with these....
so much so in fact that I'm thinking of building another pair...nothing I've got left comes close to the bass precision and pitch clarity...

oh waily..and I've recently got rid of the templates..oh waily indeed.

I think I need a drink.

Oh dear.
There's a pair here missing the tweeters. Made by my friend Hywel in 2003.
I had started selling the bits

By all means have a drink though !

What about building something to surpass them?
IIRC, Ariels are an older design - perhaps something with modern drivers would be even better..?

FWIW, the speakers I'm working on at the moment do well for bass precision - 8" aluminium cones in sealed boxes, crossed to a 1" compression driver at around 1kHz.
Just waiting for crossover parts to arrive so I can use a stereo amp. Once I've got them up and running, you'd be welcome to come over for a listen.

I'd love to hear you try and persuade Steve Shiels of the benefit of that logic.

but seriously, thanks for the offer, though I think I have one too many projects on the go at the moment to really think about a new pair of ariels. But if/when I do they would have to be with a new(modern) pair of drivers because the Vifa P13s are no longer available.

Except the quartet of very good ones that I have, that have been in a North-facing room.

There is a very compelling thread at DIY Audio on "Beyond the Ariels"...

There is but it would take about a week to read it. I used to look at it regularlyn dropped in after a year break last week but gave up as nothing is being built as far as I can make out. Unless it's changed?

You'll find my name from time to time on there, years ago. As Stephen says, hard to find anything now. it became a compendium of anything related to the potential drivers, horns, acoustics, stereo etc etc and a lot of tedious argument, much of it stirred-up by Earl Geddes. It's a shame as there was a lot of good stuff in there.

I think the main relevant system that was built was Gary Dahl's one.
