Surrounds can be repaired! ....or re-newed.

The surround is integral with the cone.

Copydex was used (last night) to effect a temporary repair.

Just about to drill the fixing holes.

The speaker, the copydex or the whole thing?

The whole thing.

Might be OK for TV speakers in a deaf persons house.

That was always a possibility.

Try the antiphase thing, I.e. take an output from the positive of left and right speakers to your new bass unit and place it behind the listener - bingo.... or not.

Replacements are often available and judicial and careful appliance of such as copy dex can work wonders - nothing to lose and experience to gain!

Once tried making surrounds out of fabric and glue, was a miserable failure

I've re-coned and re-surrounded quite a few pairs of speakers - never Lowthers though - no clearance for clumsiness.
