A real 'mans' shop;

http://www.axminster.co.uk

Only a short drive from me - I have spent many an hour in their retail outlet.

I've got several of their own brand tools and they've been excellent.

A copy of their catalogue is a must for every coffee table.

Another option for hobby budgets is the Trend version:

http://www.trend-uk.com/en/UK/productli ... _pro.html

and they do a range of accessories to attach your own kit to it

http://www.trend-uk.com/en/UK/productli ... ories.html

CNC is great for cutting flat sheets into whatever shape you can draw, but the kit I have access to will not do compound angle cuts. Its advantage over table saws is that is will do curves and irregular shapes with ease, and it runs itself while I have a brew and watch. (The holey braces on my A12 mltl's would not have happened without cnc, I just would have jigsawed some cutouts by eye. Same acoustic results, but the holey braces did look much more shoddy).

I like your plan Steve of using it to produce good quality templates, this feels like the right compromise between technology and hand-crafting if you are making a few speakers to order. I know that for you the process of making them is as much part of the speaker as the finished product, and having a robot churn them out by the dozen while you have a brew is not your cup of tea (if you'll pardon the pun).

I seem to remember our Ed (remember him ? :) ) had similar qualms about using machine cut panels and still claiming his speakers to be "hand made".

I saw Ed a month ago as it happens, and he told me he's currently working on an radialstrahler omni concept. Must be something in the water with these omnis :-). Results to be posted on Ed's website soon apparently. Perhaps something like this???

They're all at it!

OmniMets are veneered and waxed.
Here's the right hand speaker in all its nice, figured, African walnut glory:
Don't you just lurrve that colour?
Right! Let's get them wired up and start them running in.

Have some nice silver ring, round, metal mesh grilles on order for delivery this week.
Four this time: one each for the bass/mid and tweeter.
Should go beautifully with the golden hued veneer.

Niiice :D

The sound is of course almost identical to the prototypes, what is different is that
treble definition has improved due to the Mundorf Silver/Gold, foil- in-oil tweeter cap.
Not cheap, those Mndorfs, but worth the money, in my view.

Aye...Making them is the thing for me. I'm not averse to a bit of technology...up to a point, and as you say, CNC'ing some templates would be an ideal use of the tech in my case.

The walnut ones I have just finished for our own use are running sweet as nuts. The mahogany ones are going out for evaluation this weekend.

Have just taken the prototype OmniMets out for a week of evaluation; both for sound quality and aesthetics.

You should call them Huey and Dewey, remember that old early 70s sci fi film Silent Running about saving trees from extinction. They look as if they get up and walk around the room at night :D
