Hi aquapiranha,

Thanks for the compliment.

I'll answer your questions in order:
Did you use veneered board, or did you veneer the lot after building them?
I used plain unveneered 18mm MDF and veneered them during the build. The side panels, base and angled back piece have to be veneered before assembley. Only on the exposed face. So in the case the side panels, the inside face. I also veneered the rear edge of the side panels at this time. Just the curved rear.

I then assembled and glued up the cabinets remembering to add the internal damping before the second side panel was glued in place. I use biscuit joints to aid assembley and glue up.

Left overnight to allow the glue to dry I then veneer the rest of the exposed unveneered surfaces. In this case the veneer is Ash and took 6 full size leaves approx 380mm wide x 3m long to get matched panels for each speaker.
Also, where did you get the drivers (MA) did you buy them direct?
I bought my CHP70 drivers from Blue Planet Acoustic in Germany http://oaudio.de/.

These are the European version of the driver with black chassis and unlike the ones on Mark Audio web site, which have cream coloured chassis to match the cone, and are soley for the Japanese market and to special order.

Hope this helps.

I have now replaced the wood blocks to raise the speakers off my carpeted timber suspended floor with some nice outrigger style spiked feet. These are made from scraps of 10mm x 25mm solid oak strip wood and a 28mm diameter broom handle. The spikes I've had lying around for ages.

Can't say with all truth this has improved the sound but they sure look better than those blocks they were on.

The bottoms aren't veneered...

Shoddy!

Excellent use of broom handle our-Colin. Top marks for that though.

I wasn't sure I would have enough veneer to do the bottoms. That's why they are left so. We'll have to see what veneer is left over when I have built the 'Fostex' pair. Hey

Those look rather nice Colin, and very much in keeping with the clean lines of the cabinet.
Do they provide much better stability ?

Any chance of a nice full length piccy ?

Re "not improved" do you mean compared with using the previous blocks?

Yes Mike.

I have only had a quick listen with the spikes and that was just a couple tracks but I couln't really hear any real improvements. I suspect if the floor wasn't carpeted and was just bare hardwood it might make a difference, with the spikes in some floor cup washers.

But the general idea is to raise the speakers off the carpet to tame the boom from the cabinets with the rear port being low down. I find this with most floorstanding speakers in my listening room.

Yes they do provide better stability with the spikes and the outrigger cross members rebated 10mm into the cabinet bass.

I'll take some full length piccies tomorrow when the light is better.

Yup that's the bit I was interested in. Probs mine could do with raising another inch or so as well, 'least as a sperrymint, still may not do much. I'll saw up some wood when the weather is warmer. :D
