#1831 Oooh ... hang on ...
Life may still be good and worth living ...
Took almost all that damned foam out this evening.
Added a couple of paint cans to reduce volume to about 9 litres, sealed it up and started listening.
Very significant improvement from Saturday. It's starting to do that thing again.
Should be significant changes down to target 6 litres, from here.
Happy Days

So glad it's working out for you Mark.

No, two more ! This is where SimonC comes into action - gives him a chance to get the CNC router into action on the Mk.2's .
This build is a contender for the 'World's ugliest speaker' competition .
Anyway, better not tempt fate too much, wait till end of week for a full confidence assessment, if I can take another 2 or 3 litres out of the back-volume. Happier than yesterday though, for sure.

That picture reminds me of something. Similar to a Vitavox speaker maybe?IslandPink wrote: ↑Sat Feb 25, 2017 10:56 pm As usual, things are inconclusive.
Somewhere between and at the moment. I think the reduced back-volume is going in the right direction though.
Bought some balsa wood. Not messing with that rubbish builders foam again, don't know what Romy was talking about . I'm not even sure it's that rigid when hardened. Perhaps they have different stuff in Boston.

Keep up, Jan !
PMVO stands for 'Poor Man's Vox Olympian'
Just put a bit of balsa in there to take out some more volume. Need more though - trip to Warrington ( to see mum ) will enable me to buy more at Hobbycraft at the weekend. Will do another test Friday though.

Is balsa dense enough Mark? I wonder if it's not unlike expanding foam with a relatively high air content. What do I know?!

Yes - seems alright from impressions of handling and knocking knuckles on it this evening. Certainly way more solid that the foam I had in there at the weekend. A coating or two of varnish will improve that a bit more once I have about the right amount in there. May be able to check, in half an hour or so.
Today's odd and random incident must be talking to a guy in the Co-op in Denbigh for about half an hour - about Kevin Scott, Guy Sergeant and his visit to the Definitive Audio 'Mill' to hear the Vox Olympians. I knew the guy already from one or two chance meetings, he has some Tannoy Gold's and chatted to me about my project, but never knew he was so well connected.

Plenty !
I wasn't totally convinced about the pieces I added last night, from listening . Think I'l use balsa to add bulk, but finish off with pieces of 18mm birch ply on all surfaces exposed to the air ( & sound waves ) .

More faffing, see below.
Trying to keep track of the volume in litres as it goes down. Scott helpfully supplied me with an accurate value for the Fostex 208 driver volume. The more accurate I get it, the better for the design of the Mk.2 - want to get a neat and solid solution for that enclosure , without having to do more than minor adjustment during final commissioning.

It would be nice to speak to Michelangelo and compare notes. I can however guarantee you that tourists will NOT be queuing-up to see this thing.
Test later hopefully - have made significant progress this afternoon, glue drying.
