Probably no better than hardware you already have at your disposal (possibly worse TBH).

I'd say the most important thing is getting your analog front end sorted properly - most PC sound cards will give reasonable results.

Well Chris-trouble is i just dont understand HOW !

Just looked at my soundcard and the input is a 3.5mm jack.

I have phone-3.5mm jack lead so is it just a straight connection from the pre-amp and get the software ?

Use some decent interconnects with one of these http://www.maplin.co.uk/Module.aspx?Mod ... m&doy=19m7

I've tried pre made phono to 3.5mm stereo leads in the past and they all sound pretty awful.

Hi Chris-got your e-mail.it was in the spam folder on my web mail (my server is having problems with e-mail).

Will give it a try !

I have a spare turntable shelf so i will install it on the wall near the computer and make another shelf for my number 2 valve preamp.

Thanks.

Here's a view of my home "studio" with belt drive TT (with Nicks power supply) valve pre,MC2 nearfield monitors and 832a amp.

It's actually quite nice to be able to play vinyl while i'm in the "office" !

Eight years ago this was, and I'm still thinking about digitising my vinyl.

Simple question, is it worth the effort ?

IE what does it sound like compared to the original ?

Recording your vinyl records to digital format brings some of the flavour of the replay chained used, and can sound extremely good.
You might even prefer the sound of the vinyl recording over the CD release.

Also means you can archive or 'back up' your vinyl, in case something happens to it. Also makes it portable, so you can play it in the car, iPod etc.

If the analogue front-end and the ADC are good enough, it should sound exactly the same.

I am currently looking at a unit that also does line level input (flat EQ), as I also have tape recorders. It can also function as a phono pre, having line out RCA phono sockets. And headphones socket.

I personally think it's a waste of my time to do this. It took me yonks to rip all my CD's. If I started doing this to my vinyl, I'll probably be dead before I finish :D

If you thought ripping CDs is tedious, then recording your vinyl takes it to another level.
It's worth it if you've got LPs that haven't been reissued on CD, but other than that I agree - if you want digital just buy the CD.

That's what I would want it for, digitize stuff I can't get as ready-made.

Not tried sampling anything with it but works alright as a phono pre-amp. Listening now.....

I have had a few goes at digitizing some rare discs with varying degrees of success. Earlier this year I decided to spend a bit of money on the Rega Fono Mini A2D (£89). A small cheap simple unit that works well as a Phono unit as well as providing a digital signal to usb. I never got on with Audacity on the computer an decided to try VinylStudio from Alpine soft (fully functioning trial version available). In my opinion a great piece of software at a low price ($29). Look at their website for a full description but I can now digitize an LP with minimum fuss and the software even gets the track listing off the net once you tell it which record it is.
