Update :
The possibility of motor coil hum breaking through to ali's cart whatever if may be had me worried, so ive got hold of a slab of 4mm steel plate to shield the motor from the cart.
Whacking the volume up full and taking the platter and idler tension spring off, then positioning the cart where the runout groove would be, then sliding the plate under it reduced it dramatically. Hopefully when the plate is cut it will still do it

Cart will be either a Benz Gullwing SLR ( machined from a solid piece of brass) or a Denon DL S1. Not had any bother with the Benz with hum, occasionally very low level from the Denon, both on the 401.

Hmmm. When cut and in place it does nothing. The shures pick up low level hum but the audio technica doesnt. Odd

Small change by changing the cartridge bolts from steel ones to aluminium ones. Picks up less.
The audio technica has a milled aluminium body, the shures a piece of thin folded steel, the m97 doesnt have an earth strap like the 55 does. Perhaps thats the reason.

Just listened to a side of graceland and the missus reckons im being overly picky.
She says she can hear anything at the end of the side
Time possibly to bring in the man who hated vinyl

I think its because you are holding it in one case and in the other its attached to the chassis. Maybe try some Mu Metal.

Sorted it
Ive used several smaller pieces of 4mm steel rather than 1 big one and kept the pieces as angular as poss. I found that angling the far edge relative to the coils seemed to deflect better than laying the pieces in a line

This is wot I did
Painted the steel sections and then used adhesive sheet to hold them in place. They can be removed if needs be.
A side benefit of adding the plates is localized damping of the chassis plate where it is least damped. Focused it in some more.
The chassis plate is pretty much dead now.
Not the most elegant solution, but it works
And I only burned myself with the sparks off the grinder once

Was wearing my overalls at the time. Ive learned to do that after ruining various jackets
It was the knuckles on one hand I burned, that glove ( i use hyflex gloves that are really grippy) has holes in the knuckles for some reason. And was right where the sparks were going
Still picking tiny bits of metal out
