Good job it didn't have the original poster - those go for about £400 !
Some of these things just have to be bought now before they become unaffordable. On the flipside ( SWIDT ? ) they are going up rapidly so count as an investment

As it happens, David has an original pressing. Shall we put it on the list to bring to the next meetup?simon wrote:I listened to both yesterday evening. Solid Air has more insight than I've heard from the CD, it would be interesting to compare it to an original pressing. There's just a touch of pressing noise (which isnt particularly offensive) but overall very nice .simon wrote:Haven't played either yet.
No one has ever sung with more joy than Ella. There's a particular version of "Lullaby of Birdland" that makes my heart soar every time. The Ella is beautiful. There's the odd sign of wear and it's a little noisy in places which might benefit from a good clean, but overall what a voice! And there are times when the brass section comes in that almost takes my breath away. Lovely.

Oh yes, that one is very fine indeed.
I just nabbed a near-mint copy of the half-speed mastered pressing of Jeff Beck's 'Blow By Blow' off Discogs. Really looking forward to that, as I've only heard it on CD before. It's one of my favorite records for rainy mornings -- that and 'Love Over Gold'.

Which half speed remaster is the "Blow By Blow"?
I picked up one of the CBS half speed remasters a while ago(Boston's eponymous album), and the cut is unbelievably good.
The EQ, sadly, is wrong - there's no air and space coming across on the pressing.
My standard pressing kicks it into the weeds.
There's a thread on the issue over on the Steve Hoffman forum http://forums.stevehoffman.tv/threads/c ... -crap.588/

One of the users over there has the CBS Mastersound pressing of Blow By Blow and says it's the best version he's ever heard. I guess we'll find out. The only really obviously BAD pressings of anything I've ever heard were the Queen box set LPs, which sound thin and lifeless. I used to have all the original LPs (as well as a lot of other great stuff), but they were lost in my Great Vinyl Debacle, so now Dave and I need to go out and find proper pressings of them all.
I hope I didn't just throw 20 quid down the drain, but if I did, I guess I'll have to find a way to make it up to him.

The thing is that it's easy to get seduced by the bits that are good on a record, and lose sight of the recording as a whole.
I have fingers crossed for you with respect to Blow By Blow.
You said you have the CD - its EQ is correct, and the album hasn't been maltreated in the production mastering suite (there's no heavy handed loudness wars thing going on).
It's a point of reference to compare the half speed vinyl master to.
