It actually took me a really long time to get Zappa, but once I did there was no going back. Perhaps a nice hit of "Doreen" is just what you need. If not, what *is* it that you favor? I have a particular predilection for Americana and 80s-90s southern midatlantic alt-pop, which is a genre of which most people outside the area and under 40 are tragically unaware unless they've heard the Smithereens or, more recently, Southern Culture on the Skids. In fact, I most *definitely* need to bring the latest SCOTS along next time, because I bet no one will have heard it, but everybody will think they have.

Besides, it's one of the best-mixed records I've heard in years. (Not *too* surprising, as the recording was a collaboration between the band and my old friend and multiple Grammy winner 'Mixer' Mark Williams, who lo these many years past also mixed my pro demo. I promise, it's absolutely *nothing* like Zappa.

I don't seem to have a particular genre of music I favour, at the moment i kinda like some early 80s stuff, next week it might be a bit of 60s jazz, or some prog, or abit of of Britpop.
I try to keep the music I listen to as broad as possible as i tend to get bored really easily. I have tried zappa, and beefheart and acid jazz for that matter and just can't seem to get into certain things that other people find enthralling. Although I'm sure that there are things that I like that plenty of other people dont

I like Russian choral music, so that might suit me as well.

In fact, I probably like anything that DTB does not.

I've been out to NZ this Chrimbo/NY to see family and my bro got me a voucher for Real Groovy Records in Auckland. They have a huge selection of used vinyl, as well as new releases. Choosing was hard work (and a fair bit of their stock was frankly old rubbish). But I decided to take a punt on the half speed remastering of Solid Air. I don't know anything about it but I've been meaning to get a vinyl copy for a while. And I was neither expecting a record voucher nor could use it back home what's to lose? :-D

To use up the balance of voucher I picked this up too

Haven't played either yet.

Use the download code - the download is derived from the transfer mentioned in this piece http://shop.abbeyroad.com/Music/Vinyl/S ... ZB80CAC0KX , and it sounds better than the standard CD fare.

Cheers Chris, will do. Be interesting to see how different from the CD version it is.

(Still not had chance to listen to it yet. The Abbey Road write up sounds promising, but it would do.)

The only thing with the files is that they're WAVs, so no tags for Squeezebox use.
It's easy enough to compress them to FLAC and tag them, although it is a pain if you're not familiar with doing it.

flac.exe does the compression, and Mp3Tag is good for tidying up the tags.

I listened to both yesterday evening. Solid Air has more insight than I've heard from the CD, it would be interesting to compare it to an original pressing. There's just a touch of pressing noise (which isnt particularly offensive) but overall very nice :-).

The Ella is beautiful. There's the odd sign of wear and it's a little noisy in places which might benefit from a good clean, but overall what a voice! And there are times when the brass section comes in that almost takes my breath away. Lovely.
