I'm not 100% sure about the alnico, but the pickups are the designed by Duncan ones, which tend to be fitted on more upmarket instruments.
Edit:
Been doing some digging around and found that on the Fender site they quote the pickups as being JB101

be nice if they were alnico,
Seymour Duncan was designing pickups for Fender to fit but I don't think He made them it was a bit of an advertising ploy although they are better than the normal far east products,
it seems you only get really nice electronics on USA built Fenders
the Mexican JB pickups are 15 Quid and American ones are 75 quid from Fender in the States
I suppose it matters how serious you want to get but one upgrade is to change the crappy pots to CTS ones and upgrade the capacitor to an orange drop,
I think I've got too obsessive with it all

Quite possibly.
I've finally got past the making-it-all-make-sound step.
300w 2 channel bass amp, one side to a 10" driver in an open backed guitar combo, the other to the 12" JBL car sub.
Plenty of oomph, that's for sure - works okay for guitar or bass (inbuilt active crossover, so I send the low stuff to the sub, let the 10" take care of the rest).
For bass guitar, much better than just the 10" guitar combo.
When I have more time and money, I think I'll start playing around with pickups and stuff. I did throw a cheapo single coil (off a strat copy) pickup at my bass, but the results weren't great: too low sensitivity, and doesn't pick up the low E string much.
Next time I'll know better.
Chris
PS - Chris, what're you playing the bass through?

Getting there.
I do have one advantage - I'm not a beginner.
At the moment my left hand hurts from have to stretch my fingers further apart and also from the increased pressure it takes to cleanly fret notes.
do want me to send Bella round for some SnM?

The stock pickups sound very good.david C wrote:be nice if they were alnico,

The pots are cheap and nasty, so I'll change 'em out sometime.

It looks like Chris' amp is going in the bin unless flight cases are different these days since I was a ad - surely not!
Philosophers have only interpreted the world - the point, however, is to change it. No it isn't ... maybe we should leave it alone for a while.
