#1 Luddite's squeezebox debut.

Post by pre65 »

I've now got the loan of a Squeezebox thanks to Ant.

Do I need to load Logitech Media Server on my computer? Seems the current version is 7.7.2 , is that OK for an original type squeezebox ?

And do I load the software first ?

More basic questions to follow.

I need a PSU to get the Squeezebox classic up and running.

The bench PSU I have is adjustable 0 - 12v @ 1.5A, would that be enough for testing purposes ?

Can one buy the round pin plugs to fit Squeezebox, if so what are they called ?

As near as can be measured the O/D is 6mm and the centre pin is 2mm.

EDIT.

Could be 5.5mm x 2.1mm like this ?

What I'd do in the first instance would be to nip to Maplins and get a laptop power supply.
These come with a two prong female connector on the end of the cable and a selection of plugs to fit.

http://www.maplin.co.uk/high-power-mult ... pply-48517

I used this type of supply for a good few years before I built my own linear supply, and it's all
I used with the classic squeezebox, which is the one you have.

7.7.2 needs to be downloaded to your computer and is the latest version of the
squeezebox server, now called Logitech Media Server.

Knowing your eye for a bargain Phil, you could probably get a power supply a bit cheaper than the one
I have pointed to, but something like that will get you going quickly.
If you don't like the sound, then you won't have lost much.

Thanks Steve.

I've spent 99p on two of those 5.5mm x 2.1mm adaptors so will wait till they come and try the bench PSU first.

Media server downloading now. :D

FWIW Phil, the Touch pull's quite a bit of current on start up. I don't know if the Classic you're playing with does this too but the PSU's IIRC are 5V @ 3A.

Yep, install LMS 7.7.2 on your computer and point that to wherever you keep your music files on the computer.

LMS 7.2.2 installed easily and seems to have captured my limited volume of FLAC.

I will need those 5.5mm x 2.1mm plugs when (if) I make my own PSU, so will be 99p well spent.

I've been offered a brand new Squeezebox Touch by a friend so may take up the offer if things go well.

Grandad goes digital, who would have thought.

I could use a spare PC PSU that is doing nothing.

Is it green wire to black to get it working outside a PC ?

Red / black are the 5V wires I believe.

I've gone and purchased the Squeezebox Touch now, so will be able to compare it with the classic.

Watch this space. :)

I was mistaken about the squeezebox plug. It's nor 5.5mm X 2.1mm it must be 5.5mm X 2.5mm.

Bum.

Yep, its difficult to tell sometimes.
I horde anything with a DC connector, and therefore usually have a plug spare if i need one. Just solder join the wires together.
Much to learn there is.

The Squeezebox Touch came a little while ago.

It's now up and running. Simples. :D

Sounds pretty good, although I am using 833a.

I'm using a wired connection from my router as that was more convenient.

I tried Ant's Classic first but I could not get it to do anything, perhaps I need instructions ?

Dimwit question. If I had two PCs connected to my router and a wired connection to the Touch, would "my music" on both PCs be read, or would I have to download Squeeze software for the spare PC as well ?
