#1 what's old hat to some is still new to me. DAC DAC DAckity D

Post by andrew Ivimey »

I've just hooked up a Hongker 192kHz 24bit DAC PCB up to a £10 DVD player from Cash Converters and I am very impressed with the resolution and detail I am getting from this.

I am amazed.

I am playing DVDAudios which sound not special on ordinary DVD outputs.

Proof of the Pudding, I suppose, is (how much of) an increase in Fidelity I get from this DAC instead of using the normal Squeezebox audio outs. Then I would be convinced.

Here's a DAC that looks very similar to the one I got from BigLawHK, bought a good while ago and has been gathering dust in the cupboard.

Lampizate? all in good time!

Does it compare favourably to the Micromega DAC ?

We have one of those Cash Converters in Blackburn. There's a 1200w PA amp in there for £100, and I'm soooo tempted, but I'd have little use for all that power (unless I need a bigger guitar amp...).

Stuff comes and goes quite quick there, so I keep checking for an old(ish) CD player or record deck that'll be better than my current one.

Micromega is excellent but ultimately limited by only doing 44.1kHz 16bit. It is 'rather old' now - pity but there you go. The Micromega transport is knackered; jumps all over the place!

Keep checking.I got a Pioneer PD-S505 for £19.99! OK,not mint and no remote, but it sounded great and made an even better transport.Tell you what, are you going to Owston? If you can wait that long,I'll bring it down and you can take it away gratis.
