they do worry me as well dear heart, but not as much as they did before I gave them a good thrashing......andrew Ivimey wrote: but you know ... transistors worry me

Yep, that'll do... good enough.
e.g. though - has anyone blown a cmos I.C. by static alone??? How gingerly I used to treat them, but really, did they ever conk out? Did they Fcuk?
But still, prob. because my eyesight is crap and its been a long time, I'm reluctant to get back into transistors where in my youth, I did millions.

I'm idly thinking of trying germanium power trannies again.
Does that make me certifiable?

it'll never catch on.
Surely the 2N3055 was the best, the greatest and mostest, that left the Mullards so far behind as to be mistaken for warts on the carcasses of rotting silurian monsters.??!!

Not OC28 no.
I dunno I was always suspicious of 2N3055, it seemed to be more about raw power and not much else.
Re the trannies vs valves argument, I read recently (somewhere on't web) that the actual amplifying device doesn't matter that much. Although lot of us have had the experience of differences between valve types or how they're wired up (?)
Notwithstanding, I still hold to the notion that there is a difference in basic prinicple ~ electrons in a semiconductor move like waves in a crystal, with behaviour involving quantum mechanics, however electrons in a valve move like ~ whatever ~ clouds? in a vacuum.

Did you know? (yes it's one of those) space isn't empty, all the time sub-atomic particles are spontaneously appearing, and then because they are always in pairs with equal and opposite masses, they immediately cancel each other out and disappear. That's happening inside your valves!

I have ordered a ten turn pot for the bias adjustment,as its hard to get it right with a single turn one.
Also,as each amp only has two resistors I had it in mind to try some boooooooteeeeeeek ones. First thought was Kiwame-any other thoughts ?
A bit "softer" than metal films is the ideal.
1K & 1M if anyone has anything "interesting" to try, but I do have a few other things to get from Hi-fi collective.

That's probably where your "transistor ear" is coming from! Seriously...pre65 wrote:A bit "softer" than metal films is the ideal.
Had to look at the diagram again ~ presume it's still as original?
OK see where the 1k and 1M are now. Yep Kiwame, unfortunately the only 1M Kiwames HFC have got are the 5W ones and they're huge. Alright if you've got the space though, which I think you have.
Or, you might use a 900-and-something K 2W one instead. Just a bit lower value.

Thanks Al-I will try a couple of those if I may.
I now remember the 1K was one of my carbon grid stoppers so the only "metal" resistor is the 1M.
