#1 Hiraga MC pre preamp

Post by Graeme »

Anyone know anything about this?

Thinking about getting a 103 to play with so am thinking about my options.

This was recomended as a possible alternative to step up Tx's.

I built one by a chap called Marshall Leach, cost be about £5'r worth of bits. Do a web search sounded good to me. That reminds me I must resurrect it, I have Hagerman Piccolo on loan wand want to do a comparison.

Oh, do these have the same issues as Tx's, I.E. loading and what about the amount it 'boosts' the signal? With Tx's we have different ratio's, i assume its just 'one size fits all' with these?

In general, loading is configurable but it will effect gain, much as in a step up. Gain is also selectable on the Pic. Its a bit more complicated on Leach's stuff as they are more like I to V converters.

Interesting, cheap enough too if its any good.

How do these compare sound wise to step ups? For arguments sake, cinemags, there cheap enough too.

I find step ups more organic and head amps more dynamic, but that's a very simplistic explanation and the real world is never black and white.

If you build one of Leach's designs they are very cheap and worth a go.

You really can't go wrong for £5 and if you don't like it pick up a pair of Cinemags.

Thats what i thought.

Is it possible to have swithable gain and loading on the first circuit?

What governs the gain and loading?

Sorry, silly Question probably :)

On the Leach?

His web site is pretty good, I built the common emitter, I have a layout somewhere for it to put on bit of strip board, you are welcome to a copy if you go down this route.

You might have trouble getting the transistors for the first one. Although, you might be able to find equivalents.
