Hi Andrew,
Thanks! I'm sure I'll love it here!
A kind person tipped me off!
Cheers,
Tony

Ok, this is my reason for being here...I'm here now as well but I have to ask...why?
I created this place some months ago when the WD BB went away for a week or so, as a backup place. The WD forum came back, so I did nothing more.
Now go back and read the last month or so of activitity on the WD forum.
1. It started to be hard to post anything that was in any way commercial. The reason for that was understood, the WD forum was Peters place, for his products, as it should be, but it would be nice to have a place where such links could be posted.
2. It started to become hard work on the WD forum (IMHO), everytime you expressed an opinion, you were then expected to (or it was demanded) that you justify the opinion. IMHO, life it too short to expect or need everyone to agree with you.
3. People were asking questions over and over again, I assume because they didn't like the answer they were getting. Again, life is too short.
4. add the previous three together, and the fact it was just getting boring. I won't name the person who pointed this out to me (but he was spot on), but the WD forum seemes to have a high percentage of people talking about and expressing a view on things, and a low percentage who are actually doing something.
Again, just IMHO, others may have different reasons for coming here, I still read the WD forum now and again, I have stopped posting, and I intend to break the addiction of reading it as soon as I can. Nothing against the folk at WD or the people on the forum, I just decided that for me, it was time to move on.

Hi Tony, Neal and welcome to the chill out zone.
I agree with everything Nick says above. The pace I work at is blistering; never settling for long and I could be criticised for that I suppose.
Indeed Andrew I told me off (gently mind as is his wont) for that on the WD forum. However his telling off got hosed when the WD forum went down so now I don't have to have the embarrassment of having it permanently in cyberspace.
But yes, the WD forum started to get bloody stupid and personal, especially over turntables, arms and cartridges and frankly I became bored with it.
It is telling for me that during the OTL build, the first place I went to post pics etc was here, then the posts were copied and pasted to the WD forum, not the other way round. More and more, I am seeing this place as a first port of call for advice, chat.

Welcome Neal.
Nick and Steve make good points.
Perhaps it helps because most here know each other and have shared a pint at some point.

Completely agree. I come here because I want to hear new ideas, see what's working for others, perhaps learn a bit. And build something to find out (regrettably much slower than I'd wish). Others here are of the same mind I think, and because of this everyone is much cooler.Nick wrote:2. Yes, that does help, but unless we decide to close the door's (which we could) eventually folk we don't know will join. Hopefully if we retain the relaxed character it will rub off.Perhaps it helps because most here know each other and have shared a pint at some point.
This place will only be as good as you lot make it.

I agree with Nick's sentiments, I used to really enjoy the old WAD forum and did enjoy the WD one but recently the influx of people from more aggressive forums has changed the whole feeling of the place,
I just want somewhere nice to hang out and to increase my understanding of electronics,
unfortunately lack of funds mean that I'm not building at the moment but hopefully that'll change in the near future,
thanks Nick for setting this up

Fair enough points Nick. I myself have taken a long time out from posting or looking at any sort of Audio forum apart from the occasional look at WD.
I felt I needed a break, I was there with you and the other at the dawn of the WD/WAD BBS back in ...2000 I think, that's a long time IMHO to keep active and fresh so I understand the move.
I think this maybe the first and only 'neutral' British DIY audio forum(?), so you should be congratulated for that!
However, there is always the chance the characters on the WD forum who made it a problem may find there way here and that will have to be handled in an appropriate way.
Let's hope it doesn't come to that and the forum goes from strength to strength!
